I'd argue that prohibition did work.

It lowered overall alcohol consumption levels. When something is more expensive, you use less of it.

At the very least I just want to make firearms more expensive to own and acquire. If it cost 10k to buy a gun, you'd see fewer mass shootings.

This is some faulty logic. If it becomes expensive enough they will buy it on the black market. And prohibition was a complete failure. All it did was enable the Italian mafia to gain power and wealth running alcohol. Just like the drug war has allowed the drug cartels to flourish.

So only rich people get to defend themselves, hunt, and enjoy competitive hobby? Poor people aren't allowed to defend themselves and their property? Even though poor people are more likely to live in high-crime areas?

There are other ways to defend yourself, like pepper spray.

did prohibition end alcohol consumption? no.

but it certainly decreased it. Greatly decreased it.

Yes, lets hope that this incident would serve as a wake up call for some people who fail to distinguish sikhs from other communities. Though its not their fault, i feel that we have not been able to propagate that sikhs are not terrorists.

No. Pepper spray is not an effective defense for a woman against a male attacker. Especially if the attacker is armed himself, or there are multiple attackers. There are a multitude of official studies confirming this - pepper spray is NOT an effective defensive tool.

Why do you hate poor people and women? Are you some kind of misogynist racist bigot?

What? How did you get that from my post? Are you some kind of idiot? I didn't blame the media for the shootings, I merely pointed out that increased media coverage leads to the perception of increased incidents, which is not the case.

media goes crazy over plane crashes also. I see more stories about shootings than plane crashes. I cannot cite a plane crash since 9/11 from memory, because they ahve been so rare.

Pepper spray basically stuns an attacker and gives you time to run away.

Which is really all that you need in an urban environment.

It did for a couple years then rose all the way through till it was repealed. There was a reason why it was repealed. It simply didnt work as promised and instead created large powerful crime organizations. You think Al Capone became a household name because he was selling legal products?

I think you have a point that people need to properly address.

First step is to recognize that it's true. Banning guns would slowly, but surely lower the ownership of guns. The problem you face, is the number of guns already prevalent in our society. It might take 1-2 hundred years before we'd achieve the level of rarity as they enjoy in the UK.

In the meantime criminals will have a field day, keeping their guns and knowing the public is defenseless.

Because it would have been OK if he had shot up a bunch of Muslims? 😵

Those sources have an agenda, obviously. One is pro-drug agenda, other is libertarian.

obviously planes have crashed.

My point is that odds of dying by plane crash aren't so great considering that

a) volume of air travel is up
b) technology has improved safety.

Meaning that your high statistical rate of death by plane crash is because you include data from earlier in the airline passenger industry's life when the tech wasn't as mature.

Wasn't this dude an ex-Army guy? Time to disarm the military, they've proven they just cannot be trusted with guns. We need to take weapons away from EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN! GUN FREE AMERICA! No cops will have guns, no military personnel will have guns, no regular citizens will have guns, no politicians, everything will be great. Oh wait sorry that's NOT REALITY. Yo karmypolitics when you invent the time machine, we'll get rid of guns ok?

Again I'm just going to post this here so people can see how easy it is to make a gun and why outlawing them is retarded. http://www.scribd.com/doc/3170766/e...earms-9mm-submachinegun-complete-instructions
