Situps - Work or no work?

I recall reading that crunches/situps were like the worlds biggest lie, but I also recall reading that they worked if done properly. Anyone want to fill me in? If they only work if done "correctly", what defines the correct method?

Crunches are fine... sit ups start working the thighs once you get to a certain point, so really not use in doing them.. also it's harder on the back.

I see some people at the gym whip through them, and I wonder if they are getting the benefit.

I like to hold the crunch at the top of the motion for a second or two, doing ot that way, you cant do nearly as many. You fgeel the burn pretty quick.

Right. A proper crunch is only about a 30 degree range of motion.

They definitely work, yeah, and a lot depends on technique...if possible, do inclined sit-ups...those are fun 🙂

I have been taought that they can build muscle but not burn alot of fat there. The stomauch is one of the last places in your body that will burn fat reserves. But then again... WTF do I know...
This is just something I was told, not saying its law or nothing.

whats the diff between a crunch and a sit up

crunch is a reall small sit-up.. for lack of a better description. Lie on the ground, lift up your knees, arms across chest, and lift up until your shoulder blades are off the ground.

A crunch is a sit-up, but most people think of sit-ups as to where they lift their whole torso up to their knees. The latter part of the situp actually doesn't really exercise your abdomen area, but rather exercises your lower back (or irritates your lower back). Crunches isolate the situp to your stomach muscles.

If you're asking do they train and tone your abs, the answer is yes, if you're asking do they remove any fat on your tummy the answer is no...

You need to diet/cardio to get rid of the fat...

A crunch is a situp where you don't flex your hips, you only lift your torso...

Try this... lie on your back on the floor with your lower legs on a table (without someone holding your feet) in 90 degrees angle at both the knee and the hip, now lift your torso as high as you can, that's a crunch...

if by "work" you mean that they strengthen your abs, then yes, but they're insufficent to give you a 6-pack.

i do situps on a decline bench while holding a 35 lb. plate to my chest.

Have you ever used pelvic rocks to work the midsection, as an alternative or addition to crunches, leg and knee raises, etc.?

just regular situps don't work.

a) you need to do crunches
b) you need to do a lot of crunches
c) you need to do varying types of crunches
d) you need to be using weight to see a lot of progress

I do about 200 crunches per day, 4 types, and half with weight. I do regular crunches (on ground--legs @ 90 degree angles), side crunches (lay on side--from hip down--and do a normal crunch), then incline situps (pretty self explainatory) and then leg lifts (not exactly a type of crunch, but works different parts of the abs). I do half with weight and use a 10lb weight.

Do mah crunches after running. Abs are good for stability.

Don't forget that you need to do cardio to burn off the fat on top of those abs. You might have great abs, but fat on top of them can obscure that.

There are a whole bunch of different kinds of crunches to work the different muscles... To remove the fat you need to do cardio and alter your eating habits if they are bad.
