I think you should watch them in the order they were made. A New Hope explains about Jedi and stuff that they don't bother to clarify in The Phantom Menance.
 
Bad first impression for a star wars virgin. The originals are magical and episode 1 is tripe.

I was watching Ep 1 for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and my gf came over while I was watching it... after watching 5 mins she asked me what the heck is that "thing" (Jar Jar) and why is it so annoying...
 
Screw you Video King! Freakin video started skipping so i go back up there and ask for another copy, sorry we are all out of it right now... we will be happy to refund your money or you can pick out another movie... here i am putting in jay and silent bob strike back...

The Phantom Menace is not a good place to start with Star Wars. But I see that you're now watching Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back. Great movie.

As far as Star Wars is concerned, I agree with the comment about watching them in the order they were made. Just in case you don't know since you've never watched them before, this would be A New Hope (also known as simply Star Wars, although A New Hope is the actual title), The Empire Strikes Back, Return Of The Jedi, The Phantom Menace, and then go see Attack Of The Clones in the theater.
