I've used both 15" and now 14" on the T40 and at first I thought I was gonna be concerned with only a 14 in screen, but I swear the more I use it the bigger it seems.

My friend has the x1000, and my gf a p4 hp (forget the model). I also worked as a service tech for BB for 2 years dealing with all the laptops we sold. I just recently got a T40, and it is leaps and bounds ahead of the other laptops out there. Sure you pay a little more and get a little less speed, but overall it is DEFINITELY worth it. Youll understand once you get one in your hands.

Sigh - when I was in law school I made do with a 486/50 NEC laptop with a swanky 8.4" TFT screen, with no problems. It had a whopping 4 MB of RAM (which I supplemented by paying $300 for another 8 MB), a 270 MB HD, and no optical drives. Now we are debating whether this student can deal with a mere 14" screen. Ah well . . .

I'm returning my Dell D800 very soon (tomorrow) and I'm gonna get a thinkpad to replace it.

Should I get a R40 or spend a little more and get a T40?

I saw something about 20% at the chubby man-purse site, so the T40 would be very close in price to my D800. Decisions decision...

Asus M3N is what i use the most. Can not get more buck for the bang out of any other laptop on the market.

any opinion on the T40 with 1024x768 vs. 1400x1050 ?

has anyone compared and contrasted?

someone has to have a view on this?

how good are your/her eyes?
1024x768 was good for me, seems to fit well on a 14 inch screen.

Yeah I had a T40 with 1400x1050 and I ended up returning it cuz it was way too small. I say go for the 1024x768

Yeah, the 1024x768 is much better on the eyes, but I do enjoy the 1400x1050. Its sweet. Just like 1600x1200 on the Dells.

You should save some of that money. You dont need to go all the way to 2k to get something that will work for you. Look into the HP systems which are a little cheaper than the rest but still powerful(especially the AMD+M) But a Pentium 2.2/AMD 2400, witha 15" screen and 40Gig HD, floppy drives can be handy, also 512 RAm, but with these specs you will be fine.

Yes, you and your sister should. Stop by a local CompUSA and look at laptops with those screens, and see how they suit her. You really should look for yourself before ordering a $2K laptop. Make sure to try it with Cleartype on and off; I find Cleartype helps a lot with the higher-dpi screens (like 14" SXGA+). The best laptop screen I saw was a 15" UXGA with Cleartype--that thing looked almost as good as print.

Edit: Look into IBM T23's, too. They may not be as swank as a T40, but I doubt people in law school need that kind of CPU and GPU speed. The T23's P3M should offer good speed for office work and better bettery life than a P4M on a T30. They're much cheaper, too.
