Sister/Brother-in-law having trouble paying for tuition

Is $20K/year that unusual for a private college? When I was in college, it costed $25K/year. Now, it costs over $30K/year. I didn't go to an Ivy.
I paid part of my sister's tuition without expectations that she would pay it back. But there is implied obligation that if I ever returned to school (which might happen), she would help me out if she could. But I have to admit, if my soon-to-be BiL needed money, I'd be hesitant.
Do either of them work? $10K is a lot of money, but it's not an outrageous amount for someone with a job.

Um... my school is $12500/quarter (not Ivy league, but top 10). $10k a semester would be really cheap for an Ivy League.
Why are you guys paying so much for tuition? I could not justify it, my undergrad was public @ $12k/year, and if you are an overachiever you could've gone to one of the best schools in the country at that rate (U of Washington). I guess if your state's public schools suck and your an overachiever, that is the only reason I can think of.

1 term = 1 semester
2 semesters per year
50,000/2 = 25K
summer classes and winter terms if offered are never included because you don't have to take them to graduate with a typical 4yr degree

I had a friend co-sign a 7500 loan for me when I was in college. I finished with ~95k student loan debt, however I got a job and have begun paying it off. I just recently got a new job with a 20% pay increase and haven't looked back since. He's been my friend for 13.5 years and he said he'd do it again. I guess it just depends on the people you know. Since it is on his money, I did not slack off in school at ALL and it showed up in his credit when he went to buy a house. However, since I'm paying it off with zero missed payments it makes him look better.

In any case, there's no magic fix. He made himself responsible for the debt; now he needs to man up and pay the debt. If he TRULY doesn't have it, then bankruptcy is an option.
As far as the tuition costs are concerned... those rates are absurd. It cost me almost $1,000 a semester to go to a state university about 10 years ago (I'd guess it's up to about $2,500 per semester now)... while working a job making $9.83/hr. How'd he expect to pay for tuition with a $10/hr job?!?

Who? Most people. Summer classes are generally accelerated courses that are taken to graduate faster, to pass a previously failed class, or to knock out a prerequisite. Additionally, not every class is offered in the summer. Thus, the summer semester is not typically figured into the recommended course sequence for each major.
Perhaps you're thinking quarters, not semesters...
