SiSoft Sandra

I am running SiSoft Sandra on a computer I recently purchased. It is a P4 2.66 from a company called Medion. Anywayz .. my problem is that I notice that when i play graphic intensive games like No one Lives Forever or Unreal 2003 my computer heats up very quickly. I decided to use SiSoft Sandra to monitor the PC and am running just the cpu arithmetic benchmark in a loop with the max temperature set as 70 degrees C. As soon as it hits that SiSoft will switch off.

The test has run in a loop for about 25 times so far and the max temperature on the Board has been 59 and of the CPU has been 62. The average for the Board has been around 55 and for the CPU around 53. Are these decent values. Other than the CPU arithmetic benchmark is there any other one i should run to check this. Also, for how long should i usually run these tests. I have an older P3 866 from DELL and have never noticed any heating in that. I dont know if I am just being paranoid or what.

Go get a program called prime95...do a search for it....It is not a big download at all and run the torture test....sissotf does not stress the cpu enough to build up enough heat but prime95 will...

will the prime95 software tell me what temperature the cpu and board is at? i just found it but am not sure how to use it!!

What you want to do is run Prime95 to heat up the CPU and run another application at the same time to monitor your system temps.. This app is called Motherboard Monitor. It is freeware and is well regarded.

Motherboard Monitor (MBM for short) will trend your temps. for you so you don't have to watch the thing. Just fire up Prime95 and MBM and minimize them both. You can check on the temps. intermittently that way.

That is good...try getting speedfan....seems easier to set up as it detects all the temp sensors for you....Have that opened and just watch the temps rise...

Since you really don't look like any ocing is being done to your system any errors in prime95 likely will be attributed to heat....I don't know p3's limits but I would 60c for a low speed processor has to be up there...

Update .. i ran a loop of 3dMark2003 like 4 times with the speed fan on .. ran the SiSoft Sandra test as well .. the observations match up ..

both of them show that the board usually stays stable around 60 degrees Celsius .. and the CPU usually at around 53 degrees (and hitting a max of around 60)..

are these livable or do i need to do something about these?

Please look at the following:

Link 1

Link 2

The first link is pretty much what could be the problem .. does this mean that the fan in the Power Supply might not be working or some fan might not be working .. i am not sure ..

The second like pretty much show what i average at .. either temperature spike as high as 60-62 degrees but come down pretty quickly to the values in the pictures ..

please let me know ..

thanks .. akshtray

Trust me you need to run prime95...I have seen in the past where prime95 can give me +4-5c higher temps then 3dmark or sissoft...3dmark can dump most of the work on the vid card and sissoft does not work the entire cpu like prime and therefore you have a lousy test....

Speedfan may just not be able to detect fan....You should be able to tell what all fans are running.....

Try running system with case side off and maybe even point a large fan blowing onto it....Has the temps ben higher there lately??? Make sure you try to blow all the fans clear of dust as it effects its ability to move air....

Hey I ran my p4 as high as 64c without any problems...It started to throttle at 66c so be careful.....I think any mid to low 50's would be fine....high 50's to just in 60's I would think about different cooler....

measured the only available case fan slot in my computer and it is around 3 in X 3 in. SO I need a 60 mm fan right?

Also, the power supply has a fan in it but it is pretty silent so hard to hear it. I am running the Prime 95 with speedfan on. Am going to run it for a while and monitor the results.

thanks

how long should i run the torture test on Prime 95 for ..

anyone here use the same test .. i have run it for around an hour and half now .. with the MB temp. upto 64 and CPU temp upto 57 in degree Celsius .. but there is not instability or anything in the sytem .. how many hours more should i run it for?

i ran it for around 3 hours .. grew impatient and stopped it ..

the results were the same ... MB temp around 63 and the CPU around 57 avg ..

Well first off those temps are wrong!!! No way is a p4 northbridge chipset going to take 63c so that is likely a mistake or one of them the 57 or the 64 is truly the cpu temp....

Ultimately it comes down to stability and if you have it then you are fine....

Yeah, probably the sensors are tripping. Is the company that build your pc a good one? Cuz, (just a hunch) they might have just overclocked the hell out of P4 2.0 or something. Your mobo is really hot. Can you look up the temperatures in your BIOS? The numbers are kinda astronomical. Also, whats your room temp?

the company i purchased my computer is from is called medion .. its a european company which has recently come to the US market .. a pretty big company though so I would doubt they would overclock it ..

anywayz .. how do u want me to take a look into the bios regarding the temperature.. I have no idea on how to do that ..

also .. i purchased a tornado maxx fx5 fan yesterday .. and the CPU temp does not go over 45 degrees now .. same with the MB temp .. they are both between the 39-42 degrees range .. however .. i am gonna get rid of the fan soon as it is deafening .. i have to switch the computer off so that i can watch TV in peace .. kind of a nuisance .. so i am looking for better .. quieter substitutes to this fan .. suggestions will be appreciated..

thanks

I assumed the same .. but believe me .. if u touch my CPU around the Power Supply area .. you wouldnt doubt as to how hot it gets ..

ehh, those sensors can't be reliable. I use speedfan as well and have 2 sensors reporting 30-40c temps, and one mystery sensor reporting 74c+, which is crazy. My cpu is cool, the northbridge is cool, ram is cool, everything really is cool. I wouldn't get to worried unless a REAL thermometer reports similarly high temps-

like i said .. the Case gets very very hot around the Power supply area .. i can feel it when i touch it and will not be surprised if it really hits 60 degrees Celsius ..

I had a defective Powmax PS that ran 15 or 20 degrees hotter than it should have - though it caused no problems beyond increasing the ambient temp inside the case. But I of course replaced it asap - perhaps you should try another ps, and rma or discard that one.
