I need to make a decision on a motherboard. I will overclock, so i need something that is really good for that (PCI/AGP lock would be great). I don't want RAID.

SiS648 - bad overclocker, so i hear.

P4X400 - bleh, VIA. I don't really trust them. the 400mhz "bug" backs that up...

i845e - well here there's a bunch of good motherboards. I was leaning towards the Gigabyte GA-8IE533...

serial ATA would also be a big plus.

(cpu - p4 2.4b / memory - pc2700 Samsung (probably))

any advice?

thank you

The SiS648 can overclock well if you get a good board.
The P4X400 looks good but their are only 2 boards out and the soyo P4X400 board should be here in a week or so.

If you got a board now I would go SiS648, if you are just planning and it will be a 2-4weeks then take another look at the P4X400 to see what boards are out.

What are you looking for in a motherboard? What's more important to you; price, performance, and/or reliability/stability?

Once I know your needs, I could probably help you. :)

Price is a factor, but not a *huge* deal.

Right now I'm looking more for an OCer's board that will perform well, as I want to really push my chip. But I don't know if I really need "the best board for OCing" since I doubt my 2.4b will go higher than 2.7 whatever board I have?

Serial ATA would be great, but I think the only one out right now that supports it is the Asus SiS648 right?

I'm also looking of for P4 board. My main concern is stability, I will not be overclocking. Any suggestions?

I like the P4X400 Soltek. You can get the Lan version for $100 plus shipping. A second choice if you want to spend more money is the SiS648 abit.

But go to Pricewatch.com and search for P4X400 and look for the Soltek board with a L at the end, that is the Lan board and cost the same as the lower boards.

UPDATE

This place has the Soltek LAN P4X400 board for a little under $100

serial ATA is not natively supported by the SiS 648 chipset. in fact, no chipset has native serial ATA support currently. all boards that have serial ATA support have separate controllers (chips) located somewhere else on the board. the reason it may appear that the SiS 648 supports serial ATA natively is b/c it is an industry standard that will soon take over in the world of ATA, therefore the controllers are being added to many new boards hitting the shelves from here on out. the SiS 648 is a new chipset, and pretty much any other new chipsets beginning to hit the market have a better than average chance of having an onboard serial ATA controller. as for a mobo that contains serial ATA support from within the chipset, there is no such thing yet. but i'm hoping someone will come up with a chipset that does, which will leave more room on the board for other features.
