The Inq of course 😛

THE PORCUPINE HOSTELRY in Tottenham Court Road has changed its wallpaper again ? but this time it's replaced the Via roadmaps we talked about earlier this week with SIS ones.

There are some new up-and-coming products that we haven't spotted before.

Pentium 4
SIS has started sampling its 655 Pentium 4 chipset, which uses a 533MHz front side bus, AGP 8X, and supports dual channel DDR 333 memory. This is expected to be released around Q4 of this year.

And now SIS has its first Rambus RDRAM chipset out of the door, it is feverishly working on the second one, the R658DX, which supports the 533MHz FSB, dual RDRAM 1333 and which will probably ship in the first quarter of 2003.

In Q2 of next year it is expected to release the 656, a dual DDR-II 400 chipset, again supporting AGP 8X.

In Q4, it will also release the 658DX, a 533MHz chipset which supports DDR 400 memory types, and AGP 8X, and which is likely to sample in September. After that, in late Q1 next year, it will also introduce a 648FX chipset. The 660 chipset, supports Ultra256 graphics and will sample at the end of this year.

The M652 is a Pentium 4 notebook chipset with a 400MHz FSB, supporting DDR 333 and including Real 256 graphics which will sample in Q4 of this year.

In Q2 next year, SIS will intro a Pentium 4 notebook chipset supporting 648FX and apparently supporting the 533MHz front side bus.

It's got another of these P4 mobile babies, the M660, which will have Ultra 256 graphics and which will sample in Q2 of next year. AMD processors
The 855, the Hammer K8-800 SIS will introduce is already sampling this month. SIS gives no official date as to when it will ship.

The 746FX, is a K7 DDR 400 chipset with AGP 8X which is likely to sample in Q4.

Early next year, SIS will intro the Hammer K8/800, with Ultra 256 graphics ? that will sample in Q4 of this year.

SIS also has some notebook chipsets up its sleeve. The Hammer 755 K8/800 one will sample next month. That's early for a mobile Hammer chipset ? suggesting to us that AMD is accelerating its plans for such processors.

The firm has another mobile Hammer chipset, the M760, a K8/800 model with AGP 8X, WUXGA, and Ultra 256 graphics, expected to sample Q1 of next year.

Like Via and almost every other chipset firm on the planet, SIS will start introducing 802.11b wireless LAN functionality into its south bridge, with samples expected Q1 of next year. µ

i wouldn't say so. They've always made lower-end chipsets and integrated solutions in the past, and that was what kept them in business. But with the recent arrival of newer, better, integrated solutions they've been forced to expand their horizons and provide better performing chipsets to stay alive.

true, it just kinda seemed like it though. They certainly are establishing themselves as a top tier chipset maker.
