SiS 655 A0 or B0 - how do you tell the difference?

There are already lots of threads on the SiS 655 boards, but I'm starting a new one because this seems to be a frequently asked question, and I have seen very few possible answers.

Hopefully Evan, or anyone else who has been lucky enough to get hold of one of these boards may be able to provide answers.

Evan - you were able to report the chipset steppings on the boards you reviewed. May I ask how you did this?

The only method I've seen was suggested by Technonut in this thread, which was to remove the heatsink+fan and actually look at the chip markings.

It would be nice if there were less invasive methods...I can think of some possibilities. Anybody able to confirm or deny these?

  • Some pattern in the motherboard serial numbers that would indicate A0 or B0 stepping (obviously would be different for different manufacturers/boards).
  • Some sort of ID string reported by the chip itself - either through the BIOS or some sort of system information utility
  • It could be printed on the box (somehow I doubt this 🙂)

Any more suggestions?

PS There's also apparently an A1 stepping of the chipset that may include hyperthreading support, but not offical DDR400 support. (See here)

I think the only REAL 100% way is to take the northbridge heatsink off and see what it says.

Some have said the Bo boards will show up as a Dual CPU board in Sandra?? Maybe??

Bump! for the prime time audience.

Posting from Europe is a bummer...this thread dropped like a rock since I posted it 7 hours ago!

As far as I know, popping off the North Bridge heatsink is the only way to tell if you have A0 or B0.

Thanks for the info Evan.

Just noticed ArborBarber's post in this thread, saying that the software utility CPU-Z may be able to determine the version of the SiS 655 chipset -- apparently it reports "version 0" for A0 and "version 10" for B0.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone who has a Sis 655 board could try this out.

Thanks,

Ken.

That's a correct statement there. A0 shows as version 0 and B0 shows as version 10

Thanks for checking this out Radelon. Can you tell me which board(s) you tested?

And if you've got a B0, where did you manage to get it - cause that store probably has gotten a batch of B0 boards.

Anyone else had any success with CPU-Z?

Ken.

if you get the Asus P4SDX you are guranteed a B0 board because ASUS is making all boards B0 which is for the delay in shipping.
