Is the yet unreleased SiS 648 chipset a dual cahnnel DDR333 chipset. Here a press release I found.

HANNOVER, GERMANY (March 13, 2002) - SOYO Computer Inc. will give Intel Socket 478 Pentium 4 CPUs a memory boost when it debuts its SY-P4S648 DRAGON Ultra motherboard with the new SiS 648/962 chipset at CeBIT 2002. SOYO's SY-P4S648 solves memory bandwidth problems by doubling the bandwidth of DDR333 memory modules to 4.2GBs. The new board with its full Intel-supported SiS 648/962 chipset also supports a 533MHz FSB and AGP 8x. The SiS962 South Bridge chip adds USB 2.0, ATA/133, and IEEE 1394 FireWire support. Combined with many integrated features such as RAID, 10/100 Ethernet, digital sound, and the ease of fine-tuning the board for specialized applications, SOYO expects its SY-P4V DRAGON Ultra to be well-received by both businesses and performance enthusiasts. The SY-P4S648 DRAGON Ultra is easily expandable with three 184-pin modules, which provide DDR333 memory support to 3GBs. The board has six 32-bit Bus Mastering PCI slots (V2.2 compliant), and one Universal AGP Pro slot.

If this is true this board will be the fastest board for the P4.

Whoah!! OCworkbench recently tested an Asus 648 board, but it was only single channel.

Interesting.........

OK mister ace reporter, can you use your resources and try to get as much information on the SiS 648 as you can find?

Dual channel sounds yummy. But I don't think current P4s are bandwidth starving even with a single channel DDR333. Going dual will have only marginal performance increases, I'm pretty sure. And these boards will be way overpriced, but not significantly faster.

Of course, when the P4 hits 3.5-4 GHz it may be noticeable, but then DDRII will make it's way and make expensive dual channel moboards obsolete.

If it was an Intel chipset I think it would be over priced, but comming from SiS it should be pretty reasonable.

Athlon4all you are right (again)! That press release from Germany is very old (when the 648 was still 'on the drawing board'). As I see it, the only 'meaningful' features of the 648 over the 645DX is built-in firewire and 8xAGP support. BTW, Soyo says their SiS648 board won't be released until Sept.

IntelConvert's got it. 645DX+Integrated USB2 and FireWire+AGP 8X=SiS 648.

Unless Sis/Soyo is using some sort of Twin-Bank-look-alike architecture, there's no sense in having three DDR slots, when for dual-channel DDR, memory needs to be installed in pairs.
