single vs multi player

I've been playing Pc games for about a month or so now and with all of the free mmo's out there is was great to try out a bunch. My issue is a lot of modern games aren't really that fun in multi player. Back in the older days there were co op multiplayer games that had story lines.

Now most have single player storylines and deathmatch or capture the flag type multiplayer element if it's a shooter. When playing most multiplayers I end up playing a moba like smite because I like the team strategies, but if you don't have a dedicated team its really just 5 people playing every man for himself.

With MMO's I've tried a few ragnorok 2, Rift, Star trek online and Planetside 2, where most things are just fetch quests excluding planetside which is shoot everyone not in your factor for some reason you really have to read into to it outside the game to know why.

SO I guess what I'm getting at are there any multiplayer games out there, that have a story line, that supports at least 4 people, that isnt just a bunch of fetch quests? I'm a huge fan of mass effect, metal gear solid, dragon age, classics like zelda and metroid of course.

Halo if you have an XBOX. Halo one and two are on PC and Halo 3 MIGHT be getting a pc port. God I hope it does...

I miss the days of playing campaign 4 player split screen on a tiny screen!

Sorry if this isn't what you meant.

not exactly.

This game is like a smarter mmo version of dynasty warriors.

fun game for a little while

left clicking a ton and occasionally using right eventually got too monotonous for me though

I've been playing for close to 4 hours and its been more fun than the first hour of rift. You level up really fast in this game. I'm level 11 and I ended up getting an item that ended up tripling my attack power and defense. I feel overpowered right now. Bit like being a highschool senior.

I'm liking torchlight 2 quite a bit. I meant to get it when it released but got sidetracked...wish I had grabbed it earlier. It's an ode to the days of DIablo 2 (made by the same people). However, it is somewhat light on story and lore. That isn't to say there is none, but the main focus is looting chests and dead bodies for new armor and weapons.

To be perfectly honest I feel that most games that are multiplayer focuses lack a real engaging story. The best games I have played in recent memory in terms of story have been primarily single player experiences.

Ditto on the story.

I don't really care for diablo clones... I tried path of exile and it was just ok. I didn't play it with any one else just alone. So maybe that would make it more fun.

Torchlight 2 is interesting because all the loot you see appear is your loot. The other players see different loot. That way you can't steal someone's unique item that is for their class. Makes the loot drops very fair. So for multiplayer, it's a lot of fun.

I've played it before on consoles but never tried it with people.

On the PC there are a lot of mods and there is the GUTS editor that allows you to make your own mods and edit existing ones. I am currently playing as a ninja complete with its own unique legendary armor set, legendary katana and legendary scabbard that acts as a shield. It has unique skills and spells as well complete with proper animations and artwork.

Even with all this though...the story is lacking compared to something like tomb raider (2013), sleeping dogs etc.
