I'm curious what makes you think this is even a remote possibility? Even if he were to come to that conclusion, he'd need the GOP to back him up on it.

His presidency has tanked, and he may fear being branded the worst president in US history.
He’s got a big ego and needs something to improve his numbers.
That could be the carrot that causes him to flip 180* and become one of the best president in US history.

You underestimate his ability to blame others for his own failings. If you look through his life, he has never taken responsibility for anything. It's always been somebody else's fault.

That still doesn't address the fact that he'd need GOP support for single payer, which is probably one of the least likely events that could happen.

Every day Trump has his lackeys deliver him a summary of all of his so-called wonderful accomplishments, so that he can feel better. Trump's narcissism makes him deeply delusional. He has no self-awareness. He's never going to realize what a failure his presidency is. Also, the main thing that matters to him is the adoration of his fan base. It's why he does these political rallies years before the next election. It's also why his policies cater exclusively to that crowd. Which is precisely why he'll never back anything like single payer healthcare.

In what way has his presidency tanked? His businesses are making huge profits, he's the center of attention all the time, he's already fired several people (I imagine that's one of his favorite things to do), and he spends most of his time playing golf. Every so often he goes to one of his Nazi style political rallies and MAGA chuds in their red hats cheer for him.

Nothing that he does comes from him. It's all Bannon, Kushner, or others in his inner circle. He's a pathological liar, probably incapable of even knowing what the truth is, profoundly stupid, and a narcissist. Fantasizing about some kind of epiphany from a man like that is straight up Stockholm syndrome.
 
Trump has completely fucked up even the most basic expectations of a statesman. There is no possible way he could do something as epic as socialized medicine in America. GOOD presidents never came close to making it happen.
This silly little hypothetical scenario is fine in a science-fiction sense but not possible in real life. You would spend your time better debating if a 10 year old could win the Oscar for best director. Thats a more likely scenario.
 
We almost already have single-payer.

Medicare. Medicaid. Veterans Administration. Federal employees. Affordable Care Act subsidies. And what is left is deducted from taxes from businesses and individuals. Total it up and we are far closer to single-payer than any other type of system. And none of that even considers medical research spending and other handouts/credits.

Just finish it off. Tax CREDIT for all catastrophic insurance. Everyone who is a legal citizen gets covered that way (foreigners and aliens don't get tax credits). Government doesn't pay much more than it does now. Paperwork, bankruptcies, etc all plunge. And it is not socialized at all since insurance is entirely handled by private companies.
 
I'll say it again.

Democrat politicians do not want single payer.
Republican politicians do not want single payer.

Will they say they do (more so the dems)? Yes they will, knowing that there is no chance in hell it will happen while they are in office. They will say it to get your votes and make it the new rally cry for their political campaigns and rallies.

You like the idea of single payer? Then you better stop focusing on single payer and start focusing on campaign finance reform where we wipe clean any campaign finance law in existence and find a way to have a citizen led panel write and propose for vote a new law that destroys corporate and PAC contributions to political campaigns. Once you do that then you can turn to single payer as well a myriad of other issues that need to be fixed in our society.

As long as we keep letting congress write the laws that govern congress, big money will continue to dominate and corrupt our politics in this country.

I think Trump is too stupid to do anything "great". Yeah, he made a nice plea that he'd "take care" of people during the campaign, but his campaign was all lies. He followed up by surrounding himself with "FYGM" sycophants from the GOP. There is no faith that Trump will do good for the American people. He needs to deliver something like you said before anyone should reasonably believe it's possible for him to course correct.

It would take a lot more than single payer health care to get him into the top fifty. (Yes, even the looney left's seven imaginary black Presidents are ahead of Trump.) Granted, the economy is doing great, but that's the greatness of gridlock, not Trump.
