FWIW to the OP I have never "got it" with D&D type RPGs. I started and quickly discarded BG2 multiple times. I have now started NWN2 (I bought the Gold pack) and I have to say I'm starting to "get it". Lots of fun.

Anachronox was great. Too bad Daikatana had to come out and sink Ion Storm.....stupid John Romero. I could have been playing Anachronox 2 but noo00oo0o you had to release what is arguably one of the worst FPS in history.

Just keep your cursor on the health potion icon and let your party take care of the rest.

By and large, yes. The only real strategy came from choosing which spells to equip at a given time.
But imagine if they had made it like Diablo, where you have to click every single time you want to attack. The game would change from one kind of boring grind to a much worse boring grind.

I tried playing BG2 but it's too damn confusing. Haven't played any in depth D&D RPG's like that before. I have no idea what to do or how to create a character or anything.

They walk you through it.
You cant even play until you create a character.

The BG2 tutorial is AWESOME, and I dont know why people shun it so much. Maybe they dont know what the word Tutorial means?
BG1 solved that problem by making the first section of the game a tutorial.

I've gone through the tutorial twice and still confused. The inventory system is different and creating a character is difficult as I have no idea how to spread out the points and what I should do.

I think it's a game where it really helps to do some research first before you play. If you know next to nothing about D&D CRPG's and just fire up BG2, or BG1 in my case, it can be a little overwhelming.

Yea that's probably why. Like I'm trying to play NWN2 and can't get into it either.

Part of it for me is understanding "OK what am I really doing here? And is it fun?" What I'm gathering so far, and I by no means completely get it yet, is that this is thoughtful turn-based gaming with an overwhelming number of options as far as gameplay. Fast twitch run and gun types will really have to slow down for this. I hit pause constantly. There is a LOT of management of your party. I am currently letting NWN2 allocate the points and I am watching where it puts them, trying to figure out what kind of character is being developed. You really have to take your time and at least try to follow the story to up the immersion factor.

As far as combat goes it really seems to be about dealing as much damage per turn using whatever means necessary.

This type of gaming is beginning to grow on me, as I like strategy games and this is a lot like them in many ways.

My hope is that I learn enough so that I can go back and play this one on "hardcore" mode as per the GameSpot guide, and still be able to survive. I'll give BG2 another try eventually after I get a better handle on what's going on here.

What I liked about BG2 was figuring out all the tricks in the system that you could do. For example, play BG2 solo as as sorcerer, memorize 4 project images and chain contingency for hilarious awesomeness.

I've had oodles of fun with Simalacrum for the same reason. Having several people all with multiple chained spells is awesome. Even better if each of those chained spells is 3 chain lightnings.
You can have an assload of lightning damage, all in one round.
