That puts it in perspective, thanks Jack!

In other news, the contact person for that "older laptop" forgot it this morning, but they said they thought it had Windows 7. So, assuming that the GPU or iGPU has drivers, should be modern enough for me to throw Win10 on for them.

Thinking, clone Win7 install to SSD using USB cloning cable, then install SSD physically, do the upgrade, using MCT, then verify activation, and optionally (if they want), wipe and do a fresh install, now that activation on that
PC was taken care of.

Depends, I guess, if they have files to keep on there, or if their current OS HDD partion is empty enough to clone onto a 120GB SSD.

What exactly are you going to gain by going to win10?

Always question client's intents.
Well, depends. If they want to buy a new ultrabook, with an M.2 NVMe SSD, and wipe and install XP on it, then yeah, I'd question their intent, and try to steer them towards virtualization.

I don't think a request to upgrade a Windows 7-era laptop to Windows 10 is so out of whack, really.

I agree. Given that Windows 7 is on it way to being EOL, then it is wise to move to Windows 10 now instead of when the owner has to.

I'd be careful with pre-Ivy Bridge IGPs. The Win10 provided Sandy Bridge-and-earlier IGP driver nukes OpenGL support back to 1.1, so you may have to fiddle a bit to install the 7 driver.

It's not a problem, just something to keep in mind. But I do consider a DX11 capable GPU a minimum requirement for a good experience with 10.
