let's flip the tables -- who doesn't?
Because every singer I can think of over 50 still sounds as good (if not better)

Great respect for the guy but Eric Burdon's (of The Animals) voice just isn't there anymore. Also DMC (of Run DMC) suffers a voice disorder of some sort now which he attributes to years of performing and drinking.

Who still sounds/sounded great after all those years?
Bryan Ferry - age 57 - Frantic
Richard Thompson - age 54 - The Old Kit Bag
Elvis Costello - age 59 - Wise Up Ghost
Bruce Cockburn - age 54 - Breakfast in New Orleans

Of course for Thompson and Costello you could argue they never had a "good" singing voice :)

Impossible.
Most artists start in their early twenties.
You can't sing professionally for 30 years on tours and still sound "great".

Neil Young... sounds good (softer songs), but can't do it like he used to... it's impossible.

Actually, I saw the Stones this year and Mick Jagger (72) sounded damn good... but again, not "great".

Of course they can't sing as well as they did in their prime, but some of them still sound great. Character, expressiveness and feeling can make up for not being able to hit the high notes.

Actually, I thought this thread was about artists that have been preforming for 50 years, NOT artists over fifty. Artists that were recording in the sixties, and are still preforming today, or at least in the past few years, are a rare breed. Example number 1;
