Since when is food not merchandise?

I got this $5 off $25 for a local store called Fred Meyer.
The terms & conditions says not valid for gift card, money orders, alcohol, tobacco, postage, transit passes, fees, lottery, game license, Fuel Stop, Pharmacy, phone activation, tickets.
Redeemable for merchandise only.

The computer didn't find the coupon and they decided they will not take it. The reason they chose was that definition of merchandise doesn't include "grocery/food".

That's new to me. I thought anything they sell is "merchandise" 😕

The poll is extremely clear to me... though I see how some (less inclined) people might become confused. :-

Food is merchandise.

That sucks. Just take it to another Fred Meyer. I think you got a dumbass CSR.

Could be a difference between prepared, ready to eat food and grocery items, usually needing to be prepared. I know in VA there is a difference how they are taxed, so could be something like that.....

food isnt merchandise, its "grocery"

merchandise is stuff you cant eat, which is why on the little price stickers it will usually say etiher "grocery" or "merchandise"
