Since when did Corned Beef have so much salt?! (1100 mg sodium per serving)

JEDI

Lifer
st patty's day is coming so I thought I'd buy some corned beef since it's on sale at my local supermarket.

1/4lb serving size: 1100 mg of sodium!!! 😱
that's 50% of recommended allowance.
WTF?!

so if you're like me and eat a pound of it in a sitting, that 200% salt!
plus whatever else you're eating for that day.

Holy high Blood pressure Batman!

Welcome to cured and processed foods. That's pretty much the case for any sort of deli meat when you break down to a per gram serving.

Lol, since always. "corned" = salt added: Corned beef is a salt-cured beef product. The term comes from the treatment of the meat with large grained*rock salt, also called "corns" of salt. It features as an ingredient in many cuisines.Wikipedia

Corned beef is salt-cured, for crying out loud.

Not sure what's highest, but how about this one? Genoa (Italian) salami, 2 oz has 920 mg of sodium. I've made plenty of salami sammiches and put cheese, mayo and a sprinkling of salt on them. Salt bomb.

Pretty much this. You must have just started reading the labels of stuff...

only by accident.
i was bored waiting for the water to boil so I looked at the label.

shocked when i saw a 4 figure #. 😱
sodium = 1100 mg
I've never seen a 4 figure # before on a nutritional label.

looks like i'll dump the water and put in fresh water 1/2 thru cooking to reduce the salt

Any of the packaged deli meats is going to be high in sodium. I started looking last year and I was shocked. Even Chicken is high sodium.

and yes corned beef has always been a high sodium food.

Also I like how real Irish people think we're insane for corned beef & cabbage its supposed to be bacon or lamb but US Irish lived with the Jewish immagrants at first and could not get bacon (lamb is too expensive) so it became corned beef.

I suggest you stop immediately, or you'll get this reaction on almost everything ... lol.

Even the 'light' Progresso soups or any of those canned soups are like ~500mg of sodium. Depending on the flavor of course...

Does anyone have the nutritional content info for an average bowl of shio tonkotsu? I'm not sure I want to know though.

Are you talking fresh, uncooked chicken? That's very low in sodium.

No the prepackaged deli kind. I think it was this one, Oscar Meyer rotissary chicken (prepackaged) that set me off.

sometimes I imagine the OP's life like a daily reset button--stepping outside for the first time, every morning, wondering wtf that giant burning orange thing is in the blue sea above his head, day after day after day.

And to be honest, I imagine that would be a profoundly illuminating way to experience life.

How are you wreaking cooking this delicious meat that you would need to boil water? If you rinse off the salt, you will discover that boiled beef tastes an awful lot like boiled beef, a flavor virtually indistinguishable from boiled water.

You could limit yourself to 1/4 or 1/2 pound in a sitting?

Boiling corned beef is sorta standard for St. Patty's day.

1) Get chunk of corned beef from butcher
2) Boil beef
....
3) Die of heart attack
4) (Wife) profits?

It's so much better to just throw it in a crockpot and let it slow cook in the brine.
