since many of us surf at work, how do you do it safely?

My workstation used to face away from the door but after the reorganization, my screen faces the door. now i have to listen for footsteps and stuff so I have enough time to close AIM and any incriminating websites, like ATOT. Have any of you ever gotten caught?

My uncle is the president of the firm so nobody messes with me. Today sucks though 'cause I gotta answer phones because the secretary took the day off for a four day weekend. They're alway pickin' on the college kid. It's still cool though surfing AT and listening to Jim Rome.

My PC plugs right into the super-switch (no proxy monitoring, which I'm in charge of btw) plus my door is always closed, oh and I'm the boss, yea that last one helps

I think surfing at work is generally accepted because everyone does it and you really can't prevent people from doing it. I don't AIM that much so I don't get caught (although I did get caught a few times the times I did use it) but they know you can't be "working" all the time. As long as you aren't surfing onto p0rn sites, I believe for the most part you're safe (assuming you're working more than you're surfing). :)

I use protection. :)

Seriously, where I work it's not a big issue. There are some definite no-no's tho. No instant messaging, no porn, no games, and no ignoring the customers (it's a phone center for tech support). As long as we focus on the customer during the calls, they don't really care what we do between the calls.

<< I don't give a fvck. They're not going to fire me. >>

that is exactly what im saying.

I'll be the one quitting. and it WILL HAPPEN SOOON! mark my WORDS! bills/rent or not! i have to keep my sanity!

on-topic: i simply minimize it. he knows i browse the net. in fact, I KNOW HE KNOWS. example: right now, i have nothing to do. just sitting around d\cking around, there isn't anything i can do since the admin guy is lazy and not installing this program on 8 machines. here in the city, when they say they'll do something in a day, it really means a week. i just sit here collecting money since that is the only thing that i can do. however. its been almost a year now, and i think my time has come to finally leave this retard of a job. yes that is correct. it is time, and the time is more closer then JLH last night

I'm the helpdesk guy at our ISP, and, i use 3 computers, 2 desktops, and 1 laptop, now, unless you're almost directly infront of the screen on the laptop, you can't see what's on the screen.... so, on the two big desktop monitors, i keep work stuff up, and i surf on the laptop,
hehehehe i should feel bad

i work for a huge insurance company reseting passwords all damn day in AD or NT user manager and a bunch of IBM mainframe systems....so i dont think they care if im surfing in between calls...but many sites are filtered here...for instance i cant get to www.mirc.com...and is content filtered as well...like i tried to see a jpg of someones "bitchin" benchmarks and it wouldnt let in, yada yada....they also take screenshots of what im doing every now and again. i figured that out when my cpu usage was upto 95% while i was staring at a txt document and would make my mouse pointer stutter while surfing through AD. so now...when my mouse stutters and im not on a call....i open notepad and and task manager and hold the pointer over the 95% cpu usage stat, and type "see, thats why im not working as fat as i should!!"
or sometimes ill just type "I know your out there!"

kind of depends.
One day while I was off, my boss went through everyone in IT dept. computers. I had changed the admin name and password, and took all but me out of the accounts on my pc, so he could not get in, or anyone for that matter, he called headquarters to get permision to change my network password so he could get into my pc, which I did not appreciate very much, he saw that I had been surfing a little like 2 hours over a 10 hour workday(or night I should say), but now I set tweakui to paranoid.
Kind of a hypocrite when he asked me to make him a copy of some divx movies I downloaded. :(
What's funny is I have about 1.5 gigs of mp3's but his collection is about 3-3.5 gigs. And he's proud of it.
What a lamer.:disgust:

We got a bunch of slow-ass computers, but I don't work at an office usually, so I can relatively "safely" browse ATOT. Well.. they never warned/told me anything about browsing other websites. It'd be pretty pathetic if they expect me to stare at Ghost status bar that takes 45 minutes each station.

Here are some tips:
window key + M: Minimize all windows
window key + D: Show Desktop (only with IE integration)
alt + Home in IE: Goes to homepage - usually the company site :)

If you are browsing for goat sex, you usually want to do it from someone else's computer

The eviction process takes about a month, so you might be able to squeeze in one month of free rent ;)

I hide little at work. :) As long as the work is done, they don't say much. Of course they don't like porn or anything like that. :)

I'm the network admin at the corporate office, even though my cube is right beside a high traffic area, i really dont worry about it too much. Honestly, i just alt-tab away if i feel somone is looking over my shoulder. Never know when the cubicle police is going to be watching. ;)

Personally as prior senior management, I do not like it when I see employees surf the web during company time. Unless it's on a break or if they're finished with their work. I remember when we used to hire students for secretarial positions and sometimes enigneering interns. It's unbelievable how stupid they think I am. I'll be walking by and I'll hear a click, type, type, type, and voila! When I get there, they're pretending to be surfing for info.

Better yet are those that install chat programs like ICQ and AIM on the company computers. First off, we did not allow this and those that were warned and later caught were fired. It's funny cuz this one time, I heard a bunch of typing from my assistant, and I was thinking, well, I didn't give her any tasks that would require that amount of typing. So I walked over and she had a blank word document up. :D Hahahahah laughed my ass off that day. I told her that the next time she wants to chat, she can, just do it on her own time. So I guess I was the hard ass manager that wanted everything efficient.

now I've quit that job, and have been loitering around for the past 6 months. Ain't life grand?

Oh yeah. gotta find a job...... eventually
