Since I have a router now, can I get a static IP for my cable connection to start a server?

You do not need a static IP to run a server. Do not take the advice to tell your provider that you are running a server if they want to know they can find out in there own time.
If you set up your server to respond to your Ip address you just use one of the free IP update programs along with a on line DNS redirect, Both of these are free. Look HERE for everything you need to know
A static IP will cost abut 5 to 7 bucks a month.

<< what a router has to do with static IP? >>

To make it really simple your IP is like a phone number and if your phone number changed every few hours or even every few days you would not get many calls from your friends.. When putting up a server you would want a router for the security that it affords you. If the server sees on the wan side a changing address it will never get to the LAN side.

The person asking the question was simply saying that now that he has a router and now he wants to put up a server, a very smart decision on his part not to put up a server without the security of a server. His question was based on the thought that he needed a static IP which he does not need. He asked nothing relating to a server only static IP vs dynamic.
Bleep

are you reading his mind?

you can run a server on static and dynamic IP with or without router.

Yep.. most have it in their TOS.. but you could always do a "Oh! I didn't know.. sorry officer. I'll play nice."

Anyway.. if you plan on hosting your own website and plan on getting a lot of traffic per day, the cable modem probably won't be sufficient because of your upload bandwidth (which is usually considerably lower than download bandwidth). It's usually something like 512k/s down; 128k/s up. Kinda the same thing with a game server -- you'll only be able to host an 6-10 player game. I ran one of my domains off my cable modem for half a year or so -- worked out alright, except for the fact my cable modem service wasn't all that reliable.

*Usually* you aren't going to get into too much trouble running services like that -- unless you're sucking up major bandwidth from your ISP or they're really anal about it (I think @home was in the past for a bit.. wouldn't even let people run telnet).

Good luck!
