I disagree with the author's opinion of the original, but then perhaps I was expecting something a bit cheesy, and so allowing for that I enjoyed it on the whole (not enough to get it on DVD). I don't get how Marv can return for the sequel though.

Because the stories in this one take place before Marv's chapter in Sin City 1. The first movie spanned 8+ years between Hardigan saving Nancy Callahan and their reunion/revenge on Rourk, so it wouldn't be surprising if they jumped around in time on this one too.

And I can see JGL as a bad guy. Hell, the first one had Frodo as a ninja cannibal. Anything is possible.
