There has been so much talk of vehicles on this board & more than anything else I still *THINK* we here at AT are still a value-minded bunch..............

That said, I just had to point out that I simly don't think there is any other vehicle (new) out there that can compete with 'value' like the Hyundai Elantra.

Heck, they're basically giving us what cost folks $20K+ back in the 90's for the mid teens.............and throwing a 10yr/100K warranty on it ta' boot.

I always mistake the rears of the new ones for a Jetta (hoped I was seeing one of the new Corollas in a test about 4 months ago, but no-joy) and the lines are rather clean despite your opinion on the styling.

It won't win any races, beauty contests, towing competitions or parallel park itself............BUT...........there just simply ain't any more value out there than a brand spankin' new Elantra.

/garage forum.....

Or a town car if you want extra class. Those powertrains are pretty tough, and you can't beat the comfort.

ya lincoln town cars are good buy used but not new

but really maybe a new mercury grand marquis is a great buy too, that is if you drive it to the end....25,000 dollars fairly loaded

no timing belts, no struts, no cv joints, no bad trans axles, cheap insurance, cheap to fix if need be, no rust , easy to work on..............old school is the best in the long run
junk yards full of cheap parts if need be, who need parts for these unless you crash it

sad the youth of america just don't get it, ride in comfort and room too
and the policea don't look at these as troublemaker cars, load the chicks up plenty of room for (8) 110 pounders

I believe you are close tothe target with the Elantra. I did a comparison (including test drive) of five (5) compacts here:

5 compact car review

... and ended up buying the Civic. the Elantra was nice and I could get a MT version for $14,000 OTD. Also, the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty does not cover as much as you might think. You see that warranty and you start assuming things ...

IMHO the Mazda 3i Sprorts that are closing out right now at $11,995 ($14,000) are probably a slightly better value.

Back in 1998 my wife wanted a cheap car to drive around town and go to school in. We ended up getting the Hyundai Accent 2 door stick shift. We had it for 5 years for a total of 127 thousand miles. Never had any mechanical problems (even with my wifes' driving style:shocked:). In 2003 my wife was pregnant with our son. We decided to get her a 4door car. Since she had pretty good luck with her Accent we decided to "upgrade" her to the Hyundai Elantra 4 door automatic trans. The '03 Elantra now has 133 thousand miles and (knocking on wood) we havent had any mechanical problems with it either. I do beleive her next vehicle will be the Sonata or the Santa Fe. Which more than likely she'll get it later on this year or early next.

Guess I should've specified...........NEW.........in the title.

'Cuz otherwise, the most value could quite possibly lie in a Geo Prizm. (Rolla in Geo clothing)

('95 Geo Prizm w/ a/c, auto, airbags........$2K 2 years ago & still tickin') ;)

New car??? -----------------> Elantra hands-down!!

God, don't throw a town car in with a hyundai. The car is wonderful.

I've got a '97 Cartier and it's gorgeous. Really, the car is very sharp looking. The comfort level is unmatched. I've ridden in benzes and beamers, and I will hold my hand on a Bible and tell you that the seats (driver, passenger, and rear passenger) in my Lincoln are just in a way better class than anything the germans ever created. The back seats are awesome, just completely out of this world - I wish I had a chauffer so I could ride in the back, it's just so comfortable. The ride is fantastic - you sometimes hear imperfections in the road, but you rarely feel them. The engine is great, smooth, quiet, and strong enough to cruise well over the speedlimit all day long on the interstate.

The economy isn't great but it's better than even the light SUV's, at 26-27mpg highway, 21 city. My car has enough power to break the (very new) rear tires loose in first gear, which can be something of a laugh.

It's not a sports car and it's not intended as one, and realistically 99% of the population would be better off with a smoother ride than "road feel" and "feedback" - don't kid yourselves, neither of those are important in your lives.

The best part is that I picked it up for around 7 grand, have performed some small maintainence items myself in the time I've owned it, and it has never once thrown a mechanical problem at me in the 1.5 years I've owned it.

It's simple, there is no car out there that will give you the level of comfort and luxury coupled with reliability that a town car does for the same price - the caddy's have the first two down but those northstar engines hold oil about as well as a seive.

I am not sure about the ones made in the last few years, but town cars are much more problem free in the long run than caddies, plus there cheaper to fix and eaiser to work on

RWD vs FWD tells a big story in the long run, ya ya ya ya, I'm talking about V8 kids not V6 or four banger.......ya the new caddies are RWd too....it's about time
