the plextor 12x10x32a. WOW.

took 5 minutes to install from getting it from the UPS guy to burning the first CD now. i'm quick with the screws.

anyway... i am using 8x rated imations from compusa that i got a LONG time ago at 12x. my ricoh 7040a (modded to 7060a) with EZCD 3.5c deluxe could not even use them @ 6x.

622MB, 6 minutes... still too long 😛

of course 3.5c did not detect the drive, so i had to install 4.02... gotta get the deluxe now.

Cool, I order one of those plextor 12/10/32 IDE's tomorrow. 🙂

CloneCD doesn't work with it though...does it?

I really wanna do raw writing for back up purposes. 🙂

i got one and it appears to be a bad one in many ways - exchanging it to see if that will fix things:

-random failures reading read cd-rw's (opening and closing door would sometimes fix)
-audio cd attempts yielded 2 coasters and no successes
-wrong manual
-out of date software

here's hoping the 2nd time is the charm.

Good for you. As far as I am concerned, my Ricoh MP7040A (firmware flash did not work but did no harm) is fast enough at 4x. Nero rules!

The plextor 12/10/32A is an amazing drive... Super low cpu-usage(especially for an IDE/nonUDMA burner). 🙂

Glad you like yours 🙂

And Hankster,

I'm sorry to hear that you had problems with yours. I hope the second one you get(i'm guessing RMA?) is better!

hankster--Sorry to hear about the problems. Wrong manual? Someone must've been asleep on the Monday that they packed it. Would you let us know how it goes? Are you returning it to the vendor, or to Plex?

dennilfloss--yeah, I thought 4x was just fine until....but, ya know, I really hate that I don't even have time to go downstairs and get a cup of coffee between burns anymore. I may have to go back to 4x.🙂

it's not the WRONG manual, it's just that the manual's cover is incorrect. from what i could tell from flipping the pages (really fast, as if i don't know how to install a drive) to see if the spdif connector was REAL... it was the 12x10x32 model alright, it's just that the manual had 8x4 on the cover 😛

as for software, i got ezcd 4.02c which is the latest version...

my manual has 12/4/32 on the cover and inside. plextor emailed me a file to update the included ezcd to 4.02c, but my problems persisted which makes me think its the drive. my nagging worry is that the plextor doesn't get along with the via133a motherboard (msi6309) but i haven't found anything to corroborate that; that and my old hp8100i works great on this mobo and has none of the problems the plextor does. here's hoping the old switcheroo (RMA to onvia for exchange) cures my problems!

<edit>
almost forgot - the patch from plextor also updated directCD, but cd-rw's still had problems. i've learned from adaptec that there is another update in test that addresses the 12/10/32, but it's not ready yet (no ETA either).

<edit 2>
interesting... upon further review, there are references to both thru the manual. both on the cover! i guess somebody was in a bit of a hurry to get this puppy out the door. must banged mine into that door on the way out. 🙂
