Only negative i really saw was even though it advertises Vista support, the reviewers said it has issues with Vista...

I'll let you know when I get mine.

every NAS has issues with Vista because of how the file access works. Don't hold that against the product.

id kill for one this cheap with gigabit ethernet and jumbo frame support. maybe next month... but this is a good deal too! thanks op

I got the 250GB version before Christmas for $84.00 shipped with the 20 off 50 Google Checkout.

The 500GB for $139.00 is very reasonable....

Pros: quiet, fast, easy to set up, uses NTFS, you can add a USB HDD using the USB connectors, you can share a printer using the USB connectors.
Cons: IDE HDD, not SATA, multifunction devices will not share using the USB connection. (The printer will, but not the scanner, copier or fax.)

anyone know the model of the HD

UPS just delivered it so first thing I did was take a peak under the hood.

The disk is a Western Digital Caviar SE, model #WD5000AAJB. According to Newegg this model is 7200RPM, ATA-100, w/8MB cache. Not the fastest disk in the world but Newegg has it listed for $109 (just the OEM WD disk, that is, not the Simpleshare NAS).

With any cheap NAS, the performance of the networking engine is orders of magnitude slower than the hard drive itself. You're unlikely to see anything faster than 7-10 megabytes/second read speed, which even a 5400RPM hard drive can muster. That said, it'd be nice to see cheap NASes ship with slower drives - they'd use less power, they'd be quieter and generate less heat.

Don't blame the NAS for the USB limitations - most multifunction devices don't work over a network anyway unless specifically designed to do so... their drivers just aren't designed smart enough. Exception - HP's multifunction with built in network support.
