Simple Windows 7 install question

My Dad has an older computer with an illegal copy of Windows XP. He wants to upgrade it to Windows 7. Will he be able to do this with the Upgrade version or does he need the full version. He is going to wipe the partition and do a clean install. I am getting a little confused if he can do it with the upgrade. I am 99% sure he can but just want to double check.

Probably been asked a million times but thanks for the help guys.

Legally, he will need the full version because he has no legal upgrade path. But - try and see. If it works, smile. If not -frown.

Well the clean install upgrade trick will most likely work, but as corkyg says he still won't really be legal unless he buys a full retail license.

I have had it work without the trick from an upgrade dick. I have also seen it not work at all even with the trick.I have also had people tell me that all they had was a Vista COA, call them on the phone and tell them your partition with the actualy copy got corrupted.
