Simple way to disable banner ads in KaZaa, Morpheus, iMesh, and possibly more...

I ran kazaa this morning and got a javascript error loading a .htm file from the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ADCACHE folder. Out of curiosity I browsed to that folder and found it had a cache of a TON of banner ads. So I took away all read/write privileges for all users to that folder and sure enough, no more banner ads in iMesh *OR* KaZaA! I've restarted the aps and verified that this works. lol, I wish it were always this easy 🙂

Edit: btw, this is in Windows XP - haven't tried it in anything else yet.

The easiest way I found to get around them is to set IE's security settings as high as possible so no scripting, activex, etc work and thus no banner ads or popups. Since I do all my browsing in Mozilla this works out really well for me.

wow that is a great idea...i use mozilla for my browsing too, that works out great!

but does it affect all users? if so my g/f would probably bitch about it. 😛

another thing to do is edit your hosts file (works in 9x - not sure about 2k/XP though) and set, say, zedo.musiccity.com to 127.0.0.1 or something 😉

Mozilla?

Mozilla rocks, and I don't have to worry about web pages running things behind my back if I don't download security fixes every other day =)

I havn't personally verified it but I doubt it as nearly all of IE's settings are per-user.
