My parents would like to transfer videos from their HDV camcorder to their computer so that they can make simple edits and send them to friends. While I do a lot of video editing, I use programs like Premiere and Vegas to do all my editing, which I think is way overkill for what my parents are trying to accomplish.

From what I have read, the Windows Movie Maker application bundled with Windows XP isn't all that great, either. However, will it work for what my parents want to do? Or, are there any other simple video editing apps you would recommend? They aren't the best when it comes to computers, so the simpler the better.

Yes, WMM will work for your parents. It is pretty easy to use, however it still isn't all that great. Save the work done often as it tends to crash often. My sister uses it a lot and hasn't had any problems creating music videos for Anime, Movies, etc. She just hates that it crashes often.

Yes, WMM is easy to use and a good option. You can also look into VirtualDub.
