I will be moving back home for a co-op position in 2006 so I'm going to need a router to share the cable connection here. I'm not interested in wireless cause I prefer wired connection speed, security, and reliability, plus I just don't have a wireless card.

At my house at school we have a Linksys BEFW11S4 as the main router with a Netgear MR814 v2 as an additional access point. Works okay enough, though it seems the connection gets dropped (wireless or wired) with heavy usage, though it seems that is common problem with bitTorrent and consumer routers.

So with BF deals on tomorrow, I was going to pick up the cheapest router I could find anywhere. Hopefully around $20 with no rebate crap. Is there any reason NOT to pick up a cheapie router, if all I want to do is have internet for two computers? The Linksys WRT54g seems like a very nice router, but at $40 or more I don't think I need its features. I'm guessing the cheapest will end up being a Netgear or Belkin. Anything particularly wrong with this choice?

If you are only interested in the wire part it does not matter, get the least expensive that you can find.

The very cheap ones tend to crash under heavy load like you said... i reckon the 54GS is worth every cent.

I bought a WRT54G recently for school (the latest revision, sadly - the older ones were better), and have had nothing but trouble with it. Given the trouble I've also had with the old Linksys BEFSR41 at home, I am not planning on adding any Linksys products to my collection of stuff in the future. I also await a recommendation for a nice, reliable wired router that doesn't break the bank.
