Simple question: Adding a shortcut to the Start Menu?

(alternately, open C:\Documents and Settings\(yourUserNameHere)\Start Menu\Programs and then right-click-&-hold on the folder, slide the mouse pointer over to the window, release, choose Create Shortcut(s) Here, and that should work too)
 
The second suggestion would put it in the All Programs menu, which I don't want.
As for the first suggestion, you would think that would work, but it doesn't. 🙁 Here's what happens when I try to drag and drop (pardon my pics, it at least makes my dilemma fun and keeps it easy for you all to understand).

I need a "divider" line, which would indicate being able to drop it there, like this:

Instead, I'm getting a "highlight," which indicates only being able to add it to where ever, like this:

Why is Windows so complicated when it comes to the simplest of tasks? 🙁
 
I see. Well, the analogous part of my "classic" Start menu in Win2000 isn't designed for stuff to be added to it either, although with Group Policy I can subtract stuff... Is there a reason you aren't happy with it being on the left panel, versus the right panel?
 
I guess there's no reason why I wouldn't be happy with it on the left side. It just bugs me that I can't put it on the right. It belongs on the right. It was on the right, but apparently like Win2000 you can remove stuff but not add stuff. My Music, My Pictures, and My Videos were all on the right, but I removed pics and vids, and now I can't put vids back. No big deal I guess, it just bugs me.
 
Hmm, well if it's WinXP Pro, try Start > Run > gpedit.msc and then go down to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu & Taskbar (that's from my Win2000 Pro, adapt as needed). You might be able to put it back. Surely there's a more elegant way, but darned if I know it 😀
 
Switch to Classic Windows Start Menu and it is easy. The Gee Whiz XP Start Menu is set in its Properties, and is limited to a specific number of items. Dragging and dropping a short cut is easy with Classic Windows Start Menu. Part of your problem is that what you to put there is a JPG and not a program. Start Menu is designed for programs, not pictures.
 
Heh, I'm not trying to put a picture there. I was just using pictures to paint out my problem. 😛 I'm trying to put a shortcut to My Videos there, but so far no success.

Both of those last two suggestions sounded just crazy enough to work, but neither did. 🙁 In gpedit.msc there was no option for My Videos, and in Classic Start Menu it still would only allow me to drag and drop to the Programs section.

Oh, and yes, I'm using Win XP Pro.
 
Hmms... what about TweakUI/Powertoys? Go to Microsoft's downloads center and download TweakUI or Powertoys, whichever they're calling it, and maybe it'll have some options for you.
 
Darn, TweakUI didn't do it either. The only options it had regarding the Start Menu were which programs should be allowed to show up in the section right above the Start button, ya know the history-like section or whatever.

Anyhoo, I guess I give up. I appreciate all the suggestions though.
 
Actually, it seems I may have found a solution! Someone sent me this site, http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks2.htm#fix , and said to download the "Add folder to Start Menu" tweak under the Cosmetic Tweaks section. Now my only problem is, how do I run a visual basic script?

EDIT: hehe, double clicking apparently runs it. Anyway, that worked. Sweet Lord that was a much tougher problem than I thought it was going to be.
