Simple Question about AIW cards

Probably a stupid question, but I am thinking about getting the AIW for this reason: I want to record TV shows, movies, etc to my hard drive, then burn them to DVD on my DVD RW drive, and then put them in my DVD player and watch them.

So is it that simple? It allows your PC to act as a VCR of sorts for DVD? Does the picture on the TV look just like it would if I were watching a live show? Or is there a bunch of formatting, rendering, and what not involved?

I was planning on purchasing the 9800 pro, but for the price, I think the 9700 AIW would be a good deal if it can do everything I want it to.

Thanks for replies,

I have an 8500DV and also record from my Sony TRV350 to a DVD. It's an awesome card!

i have the 8500DV card. this card can easily do all that... you shouldn't run into any problems recording tv shows..

plus, these cards can do much much more.. perhaps you should look into another card like the Leadtek one if you are just looking to record tv shows... a lot of the features on the AIW card would be useless to you and you will be wasting money as well..

Thanks for the replies and advice! :)

I also do some gaming and graphic design with pshop and other apps, so I was looking for a high end card like the 9700/ or 9800 pro. Then I saw that the 9700 AIW cards were priced pretty close to the standard pro versions, so I figured it would be a nice addition to have the vid capture capabilities. One of the main reasons I wanted a high end card, was for TV out, so I could play games on my TV, using wireless controllers. Does this work well?

I really don't know anything about video cards (I'm sure you can tell!), I just wanted the best and wanted to know how much work went into the vid capture capabilities. Since I already have a dvd burner, I thought it would be cool if I could record some stuff and play it in my dvd player. But, I suppose I could do that easier with just a video out option?

Hmmmm, decisions, decisions. I have $350 to spend on a card, but if I spent less I could always put the extra money towards some new games or something. Is there a huge difference between the 9700 and 9500 pros?

I think I have some more reaserch to do, lol...........

It can work well. The AIW 9700 has native component output if your TV can take advantage of the higher bandwidth connection, otherwise the Radeons are basically the same for analog NTSC output. I use a Logitech cordless freedom pro which is very good wireless keyboard/mouse combination. There won't be a big difference between the 9500 and 9700 gaming via TV-out if you are going to use s-video or composite because you'll be limited to a max 1024x768 resolution and I've found less need for FSAA using NTSC output, under those parameters a 9500pro would be as fast as a 9700 most of the time. There is no 9500 AIW however.
