simple overclocking question

i was wondering if its ok if you just raise the FSB and nothing else. for example, if i just raise it by increments of 10 so its 2.10ghz instead of 2.00
also, when i do raise it, the cpu temp goes up around the 55-58C area. when the norm temp is around 40

Raising the FSB is the normal way to OC. You may need to mess with various other settings (RAM timings/divider, CPU voltage, HTT multi if AMD, etc.) to make sure it is completely stable.

Those temps seem weird...What type of CPU is this and what mobo. Are you sure those were both load/idle temps (whichever). Did you rais ethe voltage any?

i have a a64 3000+ newcastle on a k8v-x mobo.
corsair value select pc3200 ram one strip of 512mb.

and no i didnt raise the voltage for anything, just the fsb
when its idle the temp is around 42-47. but when i play a game it goes to 55-58

thats some weird temps. I got the same Proc wit a LanParty UT nf3 and 1gb of corsair XMS and my HTT is @ 300.mhz x 8.0 with temps @ 41 on idle and 46 on load with original HSF that came with the cpu.

Its ok to raise the FSB as long as you make sure its stable. Run prime 95 and memtest on the computer for about 10 hours each to make sure its stable.

Something not right, could be

1. HSF not properly seated
2. Used too much thermal paste? paste and pad?
3. CPU fan not spinning fast enough

Whats your HSF?

i have the stock hsf since its the retail. could it be that i need to put more thermal paste cause the manual says when i reapply the paste whenever i remove and reinstall the hsf.(had to send my mobo back due to lan card prob). and does the weather affect the air thats being taken in cause its the summer and its really hot.

yeah, its probably the temperature in your area. from winter to summer my temos went up 10C. i never expected that. BUT, you definatley should correctly reinstall the hsf. the best way to overclock is to follow the guide at the top of the overclocking forum. that will show you exactly how to find your highest speeds.

What kind of paste are you using? If it's something in the artic silver arena, it should be abou the size of a grain of rice.

Room temperatures will undoubtably effect system temperatures.

that big a temp rise with a minor oc is NOT NORMAL
get it fixed before proceeding

Some mobo's report the temps high. My Abit AV8 is well known for reporting the temps about 10-15*C too high. I get around 43*C idle and 64*C full load with my 33% overclock (1.8Ghz to 2.4Ghz),but i am confident that they are probably more like 33*C idle and 50*C full load because the heat sink is only luke warm when touched and reporting 64*C.

Are you sure you are not comparing the Idle temp before OCing to the 100 Load temp after Ocing, that may explain the differance you are seeing.

If you are comparing loaded temp before OCing to loaded temp after OCing that seems like too big of a spread. With my 3000+ Winnie OCed 33% (1.8 to 2.4Ghz) i only saw about a 4 degree raise in load temp and that is with using the standard stock HSF.

remember that with any OC you HAVE TO reduce your hypertransport down from stock 5x (on most newer 1000 boards) and 4x on boards who make at 800
to not overclock the hypertransport
also even with a simple oc make sure your pci/ agp is locked and make sure that if using serial drives that you are on the correct chanel for your board as some combinations do not lock certain SATA ports
