Simple Network

HI all

I have two computers that are connected via a crossover cable. The first computer, Don's, has onboard LAN which I use to connect to the net. It also has a NIC card which is connected via the crossover to a second computer, David's

I have run the Network Connection Wizard on Don's, then on David's. I can see both computers when I go to Network Places and View Workgroups. But on Don's, I don't see anything.

I want to share a folder on Don's so that it is accessible on David's. I have tried to do this, but it doesn't show as being available on David's computer.

Both systems have WinXP SP1. Any help getting this setup working would be great, as I would like to use this setup for LAN gaming and file sharing. Internet access from David's computer is not necessary.

turn off simple file sharing

windows explorer, tools, folder options, view, advanced settings, it is the last check box on the bottom, uncheck it

make sure you have an account with permissions to the share directory

How do I make sure that each computer is seen by the other? Right now, the host computer is not listed as part of the workgroup on the client and vice versa.

I guess I need the newbies guide to homenetworking using crossover cable huh? I would appreciate anyone helping me getting this thing setup for LAN gaming and file/folder sharing.

Thanks for the link, but it really didn't show me how to connect to computers using crossover cable for LAN purposes.

Maybe one of these will help you.

If you are certain you have a cross over, and there are only two computers involved, each comptuter must have 1 nic. Additionally the computer connected to the internet must have an additional nic.

With only 2 computers, I would simply name each of them different names, ensure they are on the same workgroup, then assign the computer hooked to the internet a static ip of 192.168.0.1 then assign the second computer a static ip of 192.168.0.1. After that you may have to reboot, but then you should be able to get each computer in your network neighborhood and right click and share folders at will.

Make sure to read up on security.

Also if you are going to share the internet with the second computer, you must turn ICS on the nic that has the IP of 192.168.0.1. OR download a proxy server (I love freeproxy).

This means that your two compuetrs are connected and Basic network is configured. If you were not connected David will not see the second computer.

Under such circumstances you will see every thing and will be capable to share if you will set correctly the Sharing.

The Link in my post above provides you with a lot of info. about Sharing.

Otherwise you might want to get a Network Book and learn first the basic principles.
