I have a very simple network involving just 2 computers. Each computer has a Linksys NC100 Ethernet card with a crossover cable for the connection. The network has worked beautifully for more than 2 years until last night when neither computer would see the other anymore. Pulling up workgroup computers, the computer will see itself but not the other. I've talked with both Linksys and Microsoft and neither have any clue of what they are doing. I've checked my device manager and both cards "appear" to be working properly. I even still have the network icon in the system panel. I've tried restarting both computers several times, changed the netword ID's and workgroup names but to no avail. I'm running XP professional and using the built in firewall on the front end machine. I've disabled the firewall but still got nothing. I dont know what else to try. If anyone has ideas plz let me know. Thanks in advance!

Another note....I went into command prompt and did ipconfig on the front end machine. For the ethernet IP it came up with 192.168.0.1 which I thought was the default LAN IP for the back end machines. The second computer came up with an IP of 169.254.241.113. Each computer could ping itself using it's own IP but neither came up with anything when trying to ping the other. Something isn't right, but I dont know what it is or how to fix it :(

Jatwell, Thanks bro you pointed me in the right direction. I was able to get the IP's straight so the computers are now seeing each other. I still have one problem along the same lines though. The back end computer cannot get out on the internet. I have it shared on my computer but nothing happens on the other. One odd thing, whenever trying to connect to a site, it ALWAYS defaults to www.incredifind.com. In other words no matter what site i try to connect to, it reverts back to the incredifind. I've ran adaware on it and cleaned up a bunch of spies, but nothing else yet. Help?

Are you using something like ICS to share an internet connection from the 'front' computer?

If so, I don't know what your problem is, but I do know that connection sharing used to drive me crazy before I bought a router. Even with just 2 computers, I think a router is worthwhile. You should be able to pick up a used one pretty cheap. I don't think new ones are that expensive, either. I know the wireless-b ones with 3 or 4 wired ports are being cleared out at great prices. FWIW.

Good luck.

Try clearing your cookies on both computers and try running spybot from here. Make sure to get all the latest updates for it before you run it.

The problem has been fixed. It seems as though my fiancee's computer just had some BHO's that were blocking the internet access. I went through the registry and deleted everything for the incredifind BHO that was on there only to go back to internet explorer and see that marsfind.com is now running and still can't get out. At this point I decided to reformat the C: and see what happens. Everything came back working beautifully. Thanks for all your help guys!

Why go through all that trouble when what I have works perfectly fine?

With a router, any computer can get to the internet without the other computer being on. Lets you take down your first computer for maintenance without disrupting the second computer's net access. Also, for me at least, connection sharing with Win98/WinME was not reliable;I've moved to XP but the router stays!
