Simple Mod I did to some E2Cs

I picked up a set of Shure E2C and the first thing that I noticed was THEY HURT LIKE HELL. I tried all the inserts that came with it but none of them worked for me.

So while I was trying to decided if I wanted to return them I got an idea. I bought some of those foam ear plugs, melted a 1/4" hole through them, cut in half and then put them onto the E2Cs. They feel muuuch better, are easier to put in and block allot more sound. They are on pretty snug and don't look like they will come off when taking out the earbuds.

Edit: cleared up some stuff.

I don't know if the E2C's come with the full gambit of attachments. My E3C's came with foamies, plus three sizes of two different rubber tips (soft and hard). But I seem to recall that the E2C's do not come with as much.

They did come with the foam inserts but even those didn't fit right, I tried all of them and nothing worked.

Even if I got used to them like people say will happen, I still like my idea better because this blocks allot more sound.

Could the foam be found at a local drugstore? This may be cheaper and more comfortable then the stock ones.

So what you did was make DIY foamies, not mod the E2Cs themselves. That's okay though.

You can use mostly any foam earplugs you can find, as long as it fits you and you cut it to the right size. Drugstores often carry good ones. I believe the best kinds of earplugs to use are urethane ones (the ones that have like a skin on them), but PVC ones (the ones with little cells, like in the pic) will work too.

EDIT::: oops, looks like the ones in the pic are urethane. Well, the standard Shure and Etymotic foamies are PVC.

There's a whole thread about this at Head-Fi; I have a bunch of earplugs stocked up but I haven't gotten around to modding them yet.

I've only had them for two days, give me time. 😛

And yes they are urethane, the pic is just washed out from the flash. Also, do you have a link the that thread? I would like to read it. Never mind, found it.

Hmm, now I'm somewhat interested, I got two questions for you.

1. How did you make the hole in the earplugs?
2. Does it sound any better (ie, does the better seal lead to better bass)?
