The last time I used linux was a mandrake install a year or so ago on a friends machine. The last time I installed Linux was about 4 years ago and I installedl Red Hat. (Always used BSDs up to this point)

Now I would like to give Linux a chance. It will be used on a Distributed Computing box. (Will be running D2OL). It needs to be fairly simple to install and get up and running. I will use X with either KDE or Genome for my GUI. Also I have a realtek network card that must work with it....

If your realtek network card is a relatively common one, you should have no problems at all with any recent Linux distros supporting it. Since you have some BSD experience, and I assume you're not unfamiliar with the command line (didn't notice if you said that in the DC forum, so I recommended Mandrake :Q), you probably want to forgo Mandrake and instead choose something like Debian. Although Debian's install proceedure is kind of complex, I doubt you'll have trouble with it if you don't have any trouble understanding the installation of FreeBSD.

Debian, Gentoo, or slackware if you want something a little tougher. RedHat, Mandrake, or SuSE if youw ant something fairly easy.

RedHat 8.0, Mandrake 8.x - 9.0, Lycoris to name a few.

These are all easy installs, some easier than Windows.

ISOs for all can be had here.

Thanks for the info. I guess I will just download debian and redhat and try them out.

Thanks again,
Remy
