I've thus far managed to avoid using more complicated diodes in my work. Now I don't think I can, so I need to wire some up. The main problem I'm having is that the photodiode in question has three pins, but I can't seem to resolve which is which. I'm having the same problem with a thyristor, which has three unlabeled pins. I'm sure there's some simple convention that I'm just not in on, but I know ATHT knows it, so I thought I'd ask the experts.

Photodiode in question:

Don't have a link to the thyristor, but it's rounded on one side of its body and flat on the other.

Any help would be appreciated.

I hate it when manufacturers don't put everything on their datasheet.

Maybe this helps?

BPX65RT Single Element TO-18 3 Lead Domed Lens Case

http://www.centronic.co.uk/downloads/Centronic%20photodiode%20packages.pdf

Page 4 of 26 in the upper left corner.

1. Anode 1
2. Cathode ( Anode 2 for LD2C )
3. Case ( + Cathode for LD2C )

I'm guessing it's just Anode/Cathode/Case for a single element?
Yes, that looks like the one. How did you find that? And what would case be? And what is LD2C? Sorry for all of the questions and thanks for the help. LD2C = light diode 2 current?

I got it off the manufacturers website:

Standard Packaging:
http://www.centronic.co.uk/eostandard.htm

Case just means that that pin is tied to the case - with these little metal cans some manufacturers like to electrically isolate the die from the case, the designer can leave it floating or tie it to some potential/ground.

I really don't know what LD2C means, on their appnote the only photodiode with more than 2 pins has a third pin for a guard ring for high voltage operation.

I spent most of the afternoon looking for information on the TO-18 package, but there it was right on the same site I started on... Thanks again for the help. Hopefully I'll get it running properly tomorrow.
