simple but serious question about funerals ...

It's a 'dumb' question but I want serious answers ... why do people go to funerals? Is it a way for the family and friends to say 'goodbye' or is it just to pay your respect. The reason I ask is because one of my friend's friend passed away (RIP), but she does not know whether she 'should' go or not. Personally she does not want to go since she said she's emotionally not ready but should she go out of respect? They were junior high friends, hadn't talk since frosh in HS ... about 6yrs. ago ... TIA!

I think alot of it has to do with respect. Even if you are not that close to the person, it's to show you that you care.

You go to pay your respects to the deceased, and to offer your condolences to the family and friends.

It's really a matter of common courtesy. It shows that the dead person mattered to you.

That is correct, because I have to go to a funeral tommorrow as my friend's mother died this week from cancer.

I think if I were to go to a funeral, I would want to be near to other people who cared for that person, (EG: Family, mutual friends, etc.). Another reason would be to see the deceased done last time before they were burried.

If I didn't know anyone else at the funeral and it was a closed ceremony, I don't see the point.

<----- In all honesty, I think the funeral industry now one of the most corrupt and greedy industries around. I've told my relatives that I don't want to be burried, I want my body donated to science. There is no point in paying $5- 10k for a ceremony and casket to just burry it to let it rot.

okay, thanks for the replies ... thing is that I don't know what she means by emotionally no ready ... she just cries when I ask her about it ... the reason I think she should go is that it would be easier to cope with the other people around ...

Many people find closure in saying goodbyes to their homies in their casketts.... just remember to pour out a little liquor for the homies...

Make sure you guys buy Funeral Expense Insurance. (Freedom of Choice)
