simple Bash script question

i have script that does this:

read new_path
echo ${new_path}

how do I make so when a user enters in something like "~/projects/"
I get the full path (e.g. "/home/userA/projects/"), instead of just "~/projects/" ?

edit the /etc/bashrc to have the following as the last line
PS1='$PWD:> ';export PS1

 

[sourceninja]

I thought I answered this. dirname will give you the full path.
