I have been doing some exercise and curious to know how many miles I run.

What is a good simple app for this?

I don't like all these apps full of stupid social features and needing access to everything on my phone. I just want something where I hit "start" and it logs the miles until I hit "stop". If it stored the runs in a history, that would be cool. I don't need a map or personalized stuff.

Do these apps all work by using GPS? Are they accurate? I have the cheapest smartphone that VZW had (HTC Desire 526). Although it works well, I'm not sure if the sensors are good enough for this?

Google Fit might work... and yeah, you'll want GPS. From studies I've seen, smartphone run tracking is about as accurate as with dedicated trackers like those from Fitbit or Jawbone. It won't be perfectly accurate, but it'll be enough to give you a proper gauge of your health.

If not that, Runkeeper will likely do the trick.

I recommend to try out Microsoft Band 2 that provides accurate run tracking, steps, sleep, GPS sports tracking, 24/7 heart rate, golf, notifications.

Runtastic is a great free app that's pretty accurate depending on your phone, but it has all the stuff you don't like. Not sure what, other than Google fit, would work for you.

I don't use runtastic for the rah rah look at me social parts. I use it to track where I've gone, how far, heart rate, cal, times, ect. When I move from phone to phone, I don't lose any data. It takes five minutes to set up a free profile, then you can use the app for free for as long as you want. The pro version costs $5, but it sounds like you'll be perfectly happy with the free version.

I started off with Strava but found that Runkeeper is more accurate and has a less busy social component. I use that app in a Moto X 2013 with no SIM card installed and the GPS data is spot on.
