simple AMP question

-1200w amp w/max protection and two 400w max load speakers

-sub just shoots bass, prolly in the hundreds of watts too

-with amp, do you normally hook up speakers up to amp or can you put on a sub?

-i'm dj'in' so I am wonderin' if the amp-sub is a good idea or if the sub is better off with 1000w receiver

-thanks for any input
 
How many outputs does the amp have? What is its designed load impedance? What impedance are the subwoofer and speakers?
 
uh... i can see you really have no idea... what kind of speakers? you will probably fry that receiver if you try to power the subs with it.
The wattage rating on a speaker means nothing except how much power you can put to it before it melts the voice coil or blows the horn. The efficiency of the speaker is the important part, how much noise you can put out with how much power. if they are fairly efficient you may be able to use the receiver to power the left and right and then use the gem sound amp for the subs.
 
damn, you're right guys, I don't know wtf the speakers are 'cuz I don't have them yet 'cuz I can't tell what the eff. and imp.'s are.

what good is the limiter on the amp for if they are powering the subs?

I don't think the subs would fry the pioneer unless I increased bass level settings beyond positive +0, all else it would auto power off, but I could be wrong

What you have is an appalling load of rubbish, especially the Xplods. Get some real speakers. An Ascendant Avalanche (or any other 15"+ driver with the XBL2 motor) will give you far better performance - and if you really want to rock, there's no school like the old school: Build some horn-loaded subs.

That GEM amplifier is crap, too.

Get two Tapco J800 power amplifiers - each will do 400 watts per channel into two ohms. This does not sounds like a lot, but trust me - it is. Also, get some proper PA speakers - Yamaha has some decent stuff below $200, although building them yourself is the only option if you're on a budget.

I'll pull teeth for PC rigs, but I'm not DJ'in' a super monster party just to play out more expensive equipment, I can't afford too much eye candy sound equipment.
I'm probably just gonna get a 5.1 Athena +1K USD speaker set with a receiver that powers them just modestly. After that I'll probably sell 'em. 'cuz to rent equipment is already gonna cost hundreds of dollars anyway, which renting in my opinion can be a rip off.

What athenas were you thinking of getting?

If you're just getting this to DJ and then sell them, a 5.1 set of Athenas and a receiver is probably not a very good idea. If you plan to not keep this stuff maybe you should just buy used to start with.

I couldn't help you pick out what's a good buy, but there's a ton of used DJ equipment for the St. Paul / Minneapolis craigslist. If you start with a reasonably good deal on craigslist, you should be able to sell them again for a reasonable amount in the future without losing much value.

powered with Q GX3 amp, pushed out sound on 2 speakers. It was loud, but not enough bang to carry, even with a strong sub.

carried mid range well, not enough long range sound explosion.
 
One of your problems is that the equipment you have isn't truthful about its specs. Stick with good brands and you'll usually get honest info.

If you can work with wood you can build some amazing subs (speakers, too, but they will take a bit more research and effort). If you don't mind the time investment you'll surely spend less than you would for a comparable commercial product.
