ok, now i've actually tested it. with dual monitor you can keep task manager open while you run the game. no false readings from minimizing.

i only have 512mb currently so it ran like cr@p. i loaded a 360k cheated city, and after doing a few zoom ins and outs it hit 400mb usage! there were no linked towns, so that might have kept usage lower. also resolution was only at 1024x768.

it seems the game runs fine initially, but as you go along and it gets more pop/more complicated ram has gotta help.

i swear this game needs crazy mem bandwidth too. i had pc 133 mem and the game crawled. now iwth ddr its not quite so bad.

only ran it for like 5 minutes, so who knows how much it can climb, anyways, extreme case:) games a cpu/ram hog.

0roo0roo do you think 1 gig of ram will do well for Simcity 4 or more like 1.5 gigs of ram?

IanthePez thats with just Simcity 4 the game running correct and nothing else like three IE windows open or a program running? I guess for other stuff open too while you played Simcity 4 the game having it beable to handle anything without a slow down you would need at least maybe 1.5 to 2 gigs of ram hehe!

yea i looked at processes for mem usage, not total usage:) if such a massive city(minus neihbor cities connections) takes up to 400mb and possibly more, then 1gb should be fine:) 1.5 is probably way excessive unless you run a ton of other stuff, but sc4 is a massive cpu hog so that would be bad. game would probably run much better with an xp 2800+ or whatever they are up to now.

screenshots don't do it justice, its level of animated detail. its a massive simulation:)

0roo0roo ok. Well you see l want to sometimes download one or two 100 MB + demo game then play a game at the same time instead of maybe surfing the internet while waiting a few minutes. Plus maybe have outlook express, few IE windows open, etc. I wonder much ram would be best to do all that at the same time. I guess maybe 1 gig would do it but i am looking more toward 1.5 to 2 gigs of ram.

thats true, i download in the background too. but it seems one would optimally get a faster cpu as well as more ram for this since sc4 seems to need all the cpu it can get. well, if u want totally smooth gameplay.

It has to be related to bad programming...

There i no reason for that game to use that much memory...

I totally agree with this statement. Instead of Maxis admitting that they didn't do a good job @ preventing memory leakage. They went back and told people that either their system is too slow or "it's a powerful" game." Ya, right. Tell me about it.

Just like Unreal 1 and Unreal 2.

I expect iD software to tell me Doom3 is a system intensive game. Not Maxis.

xerosleep i heard from some people who have 1 gig of ddr ram it starts to run sluggish for them too. What in the world would the reason be for that ?

So you're saying, in order to play this I should get a machine with 1 GB DDR and 2.8 GHz P4?

What about the video card? Would a fast GPU be necessary?

I haven't played SimCity since version 1. The screenshots of version 4 seem absolutely gorgeous.

More like inefficient storage of data for each element...

You can't say "wow poor programming" because of that. At the higher populations It's just a little ahead what PC's an do now that's all.

Your must be out of your mind ;)

If you believe that Sim is more intense than other games out on the market you have another thing coming..

It is def. related to some type of bug, leak, etc.

I think I will just purchase a G4 Mac then.:p

That isn't the point. The average person, let's say a female who just bought a Gateway Profile 4. Most people see 1,000$ for a computer as expensive. If she purchased this computer and played SC4 to the point where the memory became a bottleneck, it's not fair to her (or any consumer) to go plunk out a few hundred dollars out of there pocket for more memory because of an excuse like "The game is pushing tons and tons of polys and is running an entire simulated world! That's just how it's going to run. ". While they maybe right( i'm not doubting you.) But that isn't a good answer to the quesiton of why a person (or people) who just bought there PC last week are having memory performance issues. Sorry i don't buy it and neither will the consumers.

That's just MHO.

Very True.

Isn't there a patch out for it?

IF there is, did it help?

Bryan.

have you played sc4? the level of detail is pretty amazing when you have a large city.
