Don't count on it: "EA will be implementing 'social gaming' aspects into this latest version."

--Now, I like the potential for many player-created cities linked on a large network, where economy and aspects of one city will affect the others, but we'll just have to see how that plays out.

Cities XL had that originally with their "planet offer" It was dull and largely pointless. I wanted to build a heavy industrial paradise and be the bane of all my neighbours but this was not possible.

Heres hoping simcity 5 does something more interesting.

Dunno if its been mentioned already but heres the system requirements:

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/SimCity-Maxis-EA-multiplayer-system-requirements,news-37965.html

Processor:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4000+ or better
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 2.0 GHz or better

Operating System:
Windows XP/Vista/7

RAM:
Windows XP: 1.5GB
Windows Vista and Windows 7: 2GB
PCs using a built-in graphical chipset are recommended to have 2 GB RAM

Graphics Card:
ATI X1800 or better*
nVidia 7800 or better*
Intel 4100 Integrated Graphics or better*

DVD-ROM:
8x or better

Bollocks... Looks like another attempt at a "game for everyone". I was hoping they would use something good like the BF3 engine and cut out DX9 altogether.

How can they have system requirements out already but dont even have a functioning alpha? All of the screens are concept art, this game is still very, very early.

It's too early to tell but the whole 3D thing kinda worries me. I know games like Dawn of Discovery and Anno 2070 has done a good job graphically, Sim City 5 is suppose to be the next level, so I hope Maxis can pull it off. A part of me would be perfectly happy with a gorgeous 2D game with beautifully pre-rendered sprites.

I've got a fairly good PC and even SimCity 4 can drop to ~25FPS in a 700k-800k pop city. Might be be cause it's old as sin but it's terrible regardless.

Simcity 4 never got the chance to be fully polished by maxis as EA wanted them churning out sims expansion packs. It chugs badly on most hardware, used to be ATI/AMD graphics cards were the worst for this game.

I really like the idea of using Agents for running the various simulations.
Problem is, this could really turn into a process hog in larger cities.

The biggest negative I take away from those videos is that it looks like buildings are just plopped instead of zoning/demand/value determining the type of structure.
Hope I'm wrong on this, but that's the initial impression so far.

Looks like it could be really interesting if they do this right.

They're zoned, special buildings are plopped down. (Seen/mentioned in fakebacon's videos as well as Maxis developer comments on the Reddit AMA).

Also, they seem very focused on pushing the simulation side, and freely admit that the problem with SC:S (I never played) was that it wasn't even close to deep enough.

Agent-based supply/demand/needs/routing/everything is very cool, and should also make addons very easy to implement.

Wow...when they talk about economic loops it seems almost like the game will be a full econ simulator ala transport tycoon or something. Not just a lego building block type game.

Read up, recap of dev answers to the reddit AMA. Their posts seem to answer quite a few knee-jerk reactions people are having.

My personal letdown so far is that the largest maps are only the "medium" sized maps from before; they say you can region out cities, but it's not the same :sadpanda:

I always thought of SC4 the same way, to be honest. A cluster of regions acting as "one city".

SC5 cities will be about the size of SC4 medium cities. Read their 3 hour long Reddit discussion with fans. Very enlightening.

I have faith they'll pull through. A large portion of the SC4 development team is making SC5. Also, their website currently shows PC as the only platform that this game is being released for. Worst case scenario: They port to console, but at least the lead development platform is for PC players. Also Societies was made by Tilted Mill Entertainment, not Maxis. They will support modding out of the gate and the tech development videos look promising, and I hope they will stay true to Sim City. There's no evidence yet that suggests they wont, but if anything changes it will most likely be EA's doing.

well tbh laying city management games on consoles does sound a little "impossible" at least

from everything i have read so far, this will be a pc only title.
What platforms is SimCity available on?
SimCity will be available for the PC.

I hope they being back the regions from sim city 4, i liked being able to combine agricultural regions, and residential regions, to make a nice skyscraper downtown area complete with interstates etc.

so happy to read about this. i remember sim ciry was one of the games that made my PC days so full of joy. Mayor defacto or something like that if i remember well

The reddit interview is great and has made me more optimistic.

Our paths (e.g., roads) are fully spline based. Thus, all you have to do is draw out a network of them, and you will have reticulated splines yourself. How awesome is that.
