Sim City 5

I approve this development.

In my eyes an attempt at a new title to this genre which ends up disappointing is alot better than no attempts being made and the genre remaining completely dead.

The one thing I will agree with is that the regimented block system did kind of suck. You would think after 3 variations, they would have made 4 so you could curve highways/roads.
I wonder if they are going to incorporate 'Transect' type land use, rather than their original residential/commercial/industrial classifications.

Well, Societies sucked but Sims 3 was a fantastic game. So they're learning. I hope they do keep the hardcore mechanic that made the series so enjoyable. Everyone complains about SC4 being too hard. I never found that the case. It just takes a long time to get a giant city going. But that's how it should be.

This is great news, based on some of the statements in this interview I'm optimistic, but we'll see. I realize these photos are really early, but some things I noticed:

- There's still a grid visible in one shot, but it looks like there are curved/angled roads, and buildings orient to and fill an area around the roads.
- One shot shows a road running under a bridge, finally.
- Looks like there is a streetcar running down the middle of an avenue in one shot.

Definitely excited to see some more about this, soon I hope.

SC4 is pretty cool and all, but it's just so incredibly dated at this point. Yes there are mods that improve it drastically, but it takes too much time to mod that game well. Every time I try to start a city now, I'm always like, "hmm... maybe I should find a mod for this" and then go searching for it for like an hour, along with others, and never get around to actually building the city.

I don't mind the fact that it's dated, what drives me nuts is its bugginess. The crashes make it almost unplayable.

Just when I broke away from my multi year addiction to Sim City 4 an announcement like this comes out and makes me want to reload it on my laptop. :awe:

I can't wait, I really hope it is nothing like Societies. Will Wright isn't part of it so we will see how it goes.

Game will be loaded with micro-transactions. You want that new monorail to cut down on pollution? Better be prepared to cough up $5.

LOL, I was actually thinking that you would not generate any revenue in the game and your actual bank account IRL would be what the game would draw from to build anything. The game would still cost $59.99 (of course) with a collector's edition costing $179.99 that comes with a special 'blue' version of your starting mayor house + a crappy MP3 soundtrack.

Sorry, I sound jaded. It's EA and a franchise we all know and love that we know is dead. 🙁

I think you already know the answer to this.

"To place a building, select the building with your D-Pad and press the A button."

Hopefully this will never go to consoles.

Looks like Simtropolis has all the screen shots and translations from that German mag:

http://www.simtropolis.com/news/_/first-image-of-simcity-5-from-german-magazine-gamestar-r139

That reads like it was translated from German to English by someone who only speaks French.

Some of it sounds good, some of it is worrying. "There’s global leaderboards, where everything relates to economic production or raw material players can compete with other players," says Katsarelis. Anyone can climb in the rankings, unlock achievements. For example, visit the lobby of City Hall to the building campaign of mine. If we agree, the new industry provides more jobs. Sounds like Farmville or something.

Also, turns out those aren't screenshots, they're just prerendered: In these pages you will find images, but are concepts of art. Why Maxis prevents Glassbox show the new engine? The reason: The current video quality does not meet the requirements of internal – and there is open play as full a level of development.

Why do I fear that SimCity 5 will come out half finished, and that I'll need to purchase about $50 of additional DLC in order to make it a complete game?

Oh, that's right... because it's an EA game that has the word "Sim" in it 🙂

I just hope that the vanilla version is enough. I never got any of the expansions for Sims 3, just play the vanilla and I have a shit ton of fun.

Additional $50? You wish. Have you not seen the mile long list of expansions (DLC in a box)?

Sim City 5: PETS! expansion
Sim City 5: Vacations! expansion
Sim City 5: Additional building details! expansion
Sim City 5: Public Transportation! expansion
Sim City 5: Dirty Night Life! expansion
Sim City 5: Airplanes! expansion
so on and so forth

All for $50 a piece

SC4 wasn't too bad, they really only released vanilla and rush hour expansion (deluxe was just both combined).

I just hope they release a free BAT, like they did for SimCity 4. Custom content is really the main attraction of these games. There is still a ton of custom content being released daily for SC4.
