High beems? WTF???

How were the "stock bulbs getting dim?" They either work or they don't. Bulbs don't get dim over time.

Were are you finding these magical bulbs? :) Incandescent, Halogen, Xenon, SHP, P-VIP, NSH, UHP, they all dim over time.

What he said. It's common knowledge they dim over time.

Is it really that hard to look it up on Google?

Okay, I stand corrected. How much time are we talking about here though? The last car I replaced a headlight bulb on was a '94 Mustang GT. I think the car was 6 or so years old when one of the headlight bulbs needed to be replaced (burned out) and the new one wasn't any brighter than the old one still in the car. In fact, I bought two bulbs but never needed the other one.

Edit-I sold the car before the other bulb burned out...Seven years after the car was manufactured.

Yeah, not only is it all over Google, but it's even easier to see with HT applications, since many more people use light meters to measure output. There's quite a bit of loss, regardless of whether we're talking about filament based light sources, or arc type.

Hmm, how much depends on the type of bulb. Halogen's drop off tends not to be quite as steep as some competing technologies, probably not more than 30% for a well designed bulb. Xenon arc can lose almost 50% over its lifetime. NSH loses probably 30-40% as well, depending on the design. P-VIP, SHP, and UHP tend to lose a bit less.

We have to remember though, our eyes do not perceive light in a linear fashion. We see light on more of a logarithmic scale. Thus, a doubling of output is perceived as only a small bump in light.

Since the entire point of headlights is so that we perceive the road ahead what is the point in measuring miniscule drops in output that we don't really notice anyway?

Right is stock bulbs on a new camry, left is silverstars on a new accord.
