HD streaming still needs a lot of work but here is a site you can use to test how your setup performs. It uses flash , dynamic flash http, silverlight.
It will display all the statistics on the right side of the screen.
Most of these will start off playing very low bitrate but then scale depending on connection. If you use netflix you might be interested to know that akamai is the one that handles your content streams. Netflix processes your streaming request then offloads all the streaming to datacenters that are owned by akamai who chooses the closest server to you.

I get the best picture quality from flash but it uses more bandwidth. I had no problem getting full 720P from any of the test. Most of the test max out at under 5Mbit.
