Ok, I know this is probably a stupid question, but is there anyway to set a button, say F1,F2 or any other F key to type multiple characters when it is pressed. I've seen old programmable keybards with 24 extra PF buttons, PF1-24, but the memorization takes place on the keyboard. Is it possible with a normal keyboard?

It's not a stupid question at all. You are looking for a macro-type program, like Macro Magic, which allows you to map multiple keystrokes or even special operations to a single or multiple keys. Check out Software.com or Google for "macro". You'll find many good tools.
