I know on the iphone 5 there is a silent switch that would disable all sounds except vibrations and alarms.

Any Android phones have this feature. I feel like this is very convenient

Volume Down, all the way.
So far I have not seen any Android phone without a volume rocker.

In fact, now that I think about it, I cant recall seeing ANY phone without a volume rocker.

Any particular model/brand?

Samsung phones have a button in the notification area to mute the ringer/activate vibrations.

Edit: Or what Shorty said.

My Motorola RAZR HD has a mute/unmute soft switch on the lock screen.

There are many different ways of achieving the same thing via apps/widgets. I personally prefer the "software" method as I used to have an iPhone and a few times it would get switched from vibrate while in my pocket.

I meant a switch to put the phone on silent without turning/waking the phone

Nothing exists that I'm aware of, but yes it was indeed a handy feature. I'm sure it's patented and we probably won't see it replicated in the near future.

I'm sure Apple has a "physical mute switch" in their bag-o-patents that keeps other brands from doing it.

I'm not so sure. I'm thinking it's because physical buttons cost more, and in general Android is moving away from physical buttons too.

I don't miss the iPhone rocker switch at all. It is a point of weakness- mine died a year into my 3GS' s life and it made the second year with the device suck. I now prefer a software toggle.

Why don't android include a physical AND software option?

It is a win-win.

I would highly doubt it would cost that much more.

"Much" is relative. You've got to pay to engineer and fabricate the switch, fabricate the cutout for it, have it painted, build in a programming to recognize it. Ect.

Say it cost even $.10 more in the overall production to produce...take that times 100,000,000 phones and it's still $10,000,000 in costs.

Well as an example:
I would reckon that Samsung only produce enough phones to where they have anticipated the sales.

I am sure they can make the profits back from their sales.

Physical QWERTY phones are barely more expensive than fully touch screen phones.

Ugh, no more stupid physical buttons than needed please.

You don't have to use the physical buttons.... It is only for people that want to use them.

If you want to use the software approach then you are more than welcome to.

Why is it such a big deal to turn the phone on and tap a widget that mutes whatever you want it to?

I want a physical button that toggles my GPS on and off and another that speed dials my secret mistress, so why doesn't every phone manufacturer just accomodate me?

Why is it such a big deal to include more options for the consumers?

The silent switch is a good option, because I can easily switch the phone off in class without waking it up and unlocking it.
