the thing is not many people need anything like the cfm of a tornado or delta on full whack, >99% of people can have a quiet system just by making good choices on case, fans and HSF. A SK-7 doesnt cost much more than any decent HSF and you can stick a pretty low rpm fan on it and still have a margin for some overclocking. A good choice of case will allow you 4 low rpm fans which will be plenty, and probably the 4 of them wont cost much more than two high quality screamers (especially when you account for low rpm wearing out slower). Better yet you can get a Sonata and have two really low rpm 120mm fans giving at least as much airflow for even less noise, tbh im a little surprised ive not seen posts about overclockers using med-high rpm 120mm's in there and getting exceptional airflow for a noise level near that of a typical PC.

I've no problems understanding people putting up with the noise from Raptors and the like, but I suspect in most cases the noise of full speed tornados is completely unnecessary, especially if a better choice of case/hsf was used.

anyway, tornado's are nothing, some 120x120x76mm delta's make them seem like a fart in a hurricane.

we need a device that will encase our PCS and make them completely quiet. Lets face it, newer processors, graphics cards, and memory are just HOTTER. Everythign is getting hotter, and unless there is some revolution in the cooling industry our computers are gonna get louder. Companies gotta start redesigning their products because its ridiculous that my computer can make my room hot when its air conditioned.

your reffering to noise canceling. make noise not hearable by producing a sound on the opposite side of the spectrum (i think that is how it works). then you could put a 747 jet engine in your case and not hear it, if you prefected it enough

Schadenfroh, all I gotta say is: To each his/her own. Some people just don't like their computers noisy, they like to focus on other things. Me, I'm pretty much a light sleeper. But with 2 seti rigs in my room(and nowhere else to put them) I kind of value silence. I've spent nearly $200 trying to quiet them, with pretty good results. But if you like those 84dB fans, more power to you.

I LOVE my silent PC.

Got sick of trying to hear people when I was on the phone and just hearing the racket all day blareing in my ear. My room is quiet, peaceful and serene now. It's so nice 🙂

It was those stupid HOT AMD chips that started the mega fan wind tunnel PC's. I love my new Intel <3

intels just has hot now🙂

can your silent 80mm fans move 85 cfm each?

No. Why would they need to?

Very true. I have a Sonata, and only 1 120mm fan that it comes with and everything is stable and temps are fine too! None of the fans run at full speed but can if necessary showing how much headroom I have. The PSU fan and case fan running very slow and my CPU fan is using the Asus Q-Fan feature keeping the nosie level down pretty well.

Sudheer Anne there is some new thermal interface stuff coming, one 70w instead of 0.7, another which says "The invented material is superior to all other thermal pastes, including those involving exotic materials such as carbon nanotubes and diamond. It even significantly surpasses solder?the best material currently available?for improving the thermal contact between two surfaces,"! I expect this should have a significant effect even when just used between die and spreader.

thread for one of them, cant find the other.

xerosleep newer intels spit out (marginally) more heat than AMD's, see here. prescott is thought to be >100W?

I ran into noise problems when I wanted to push my 2100+ to 2400MHz at 220FSB because I needed 1.9V to do it. I didn't want to spend the money on high-end water cooling, or use loud fans. So I cut a hole in my side panel above the cpu and put a duct (4.5" dia. piece of pvc pipe) up to a 92mm panaflo L1A on my slk-800. Then used two 80mm panaflo L1A's for exhaust in the upper rear of my case, one for exhaust in the pci area and one for intake in the lower front of the case.
The negative case pressure combined with the large duct pulls in a lot of cool air and gives me great temps with low noise.

Schadenfroh-Dude, that rig you got there sounds like a shop vac. How can you stand being in the same room with that wind tunnel running? You could probably test the aerodynamics of a Formula One car inside your case.

That thing is hella loud.

That recording must be a joke, and here I am comtemplating spending more money to quiet down my p4c 2.4 and 9700pro in an antec sonota. :Q

you wear headphones all the time? ack

no, i do not, i wear it during gaming. listening to music i use my altec lansing which can easily out do my fans. surfing the internet i wear nothing, just listen to my fans i guess, no big deal. i leave it on during the day and sometimes shut it down at night, sometimes leave it on when i feel like crunching some more seti numbers. noise just does not bother me. its not becuase i can not hear good, i have great hearing, i am one of the few that can hear the frequencys of a WD raptor. this cooling system rocks!
