Oh... one more tip. If you're rigged for silent running, your crew won't reload the torpedo bays. :) I just sat here for like 15 minutes saying "Why the fvck won't they reload the torpedos? I wanna blow up more stuff!"

ROFL! That reminds me of the http://beagleweb.com/fun-taekwanleap.htmlTae Kwon Leap sketch... "I wanna beat people up right now!"

I had a game like this for the Apple ][e... one of my favorite games ever. I can't remember the name... anybody?

Only the latest german subs had hydraulic torpedo loaders - on the other submarines the torpedoes were loaded using chain pulleys. No wonder they weren't reloading them.
EDIT: The game is made in Romania :D

Great game! I'd like to kill the HUD altogether and it appears to be possible with some key binds (subsim forums). Add the crew commands to some voice recognition software and I'll be good to go!

I played silent service II lots on my PC. Best hit was a huge battle formation, so I just fired my 4 torpedoes and then turned around and ran like hell.

In the battle summary I found out I sank an Aircraft Carrier............ Now if only it was just as easy IRL :p

The thing I'm really enjoying about this is that it's possible to hide. In Silent Hunter 2 if I fired a torpedo destroyers came right for me... even if I dove to 150 meters, they stayed right on top of me and dropped depth charges 150 meters down onto me. In this one, if you dive down below 100 meters and run silent, it's near impossible for them to find you, which is how it should be.

In fact... once I took a little damage from a depth charge, and I was in relatively shallow water, so I set the boat down on the ocean floor and shut everything off and I think I fooled the destroyer into thinking they sunk me... they probably heard me hit the bottom and figured I was dead, cause I switched to the free cam and watched the destroyer sail away. Normally they circle around a bit if they think you're still there.

Been playing this game for a short period of time. The tutorial missions are helpful, but in career, I have been doing nothing but sailing from Kiel. I have a few questions:

1.) Is there any way to manage game graphics on a specific level/change resolutions? I can't see to find anything in the menu.
2.) Is there some sort of budget on time compression? It seems to 'run out' every once in a while. I'd just like to get to more dangerous waters a bit faster.
3.)Will docking at Wilhelmshaven before proceding to my assigned patrol have any negative effects (i.e., my patrol ends and I end up back at Kiel on Patrol 2?)?

So far, very cool. Quite challenging to score torpedo hits on moving targets.

The game rocks...I've been waiting for a great sub sim for years and this seems to be it.

I just picked this up. Though I've only played it for an hour or so, I think it might be the heir to Silent Service 2.

I love the cinematics.

I might be a little late to respond to this, but oh well :)

1) Yes and no to changing the graphics. The resolution is hard coded in, but there is a way around it. *See below, for what ever reason, I suck at linking :)

2) No budget on time compression (TC), but if I had to venture a guess on why TC dropped for you, it means something has happened. Either a plane was spotted, ship was spotted, or you about to run into land. Might have to take a look around via periscope or hydrophone. On a different note, if your computer can handle it, you can change the time compression to greater than 1024 TC. To change this, go to My Documents/Silent Hunter/Data/Main.cfg. Open that .CFG file with notepad, in [TIME COMPRESSION] by Maximum change that by to whatever, but it has to be in multiples of 2. So max is 1024, then 2048 is next, or 4096, or 8192, etc. You can't do 4000. You might have to do under D:\Games\SH3\data\Cfg\Main.cfg also to make it work.

3) Before 1.3, or wa it 1.2, there was a bug about docking at another port instead of your home port. 1st off, you would lose your tonnage but that might have been fixed, but a possible work around that would be to send a report to BDU and it might get recorded, I never tested it, but saw it in the forums.
But another thing to that is, your patrol 2 would just say go back to your home port instead of partolling xx## sector.

For the life of me I can't get the resoulution link to work.

Hello,
it seems that someone was able to change the resolution for the Windows XP SP2.
Take a look at the subsim forum hereI just copy here his message:

"Sartori23 wrote:
I've found a way to get it working with SP2!
It takes a little bit of work, but it only needs to be done once.

Here's how:
Download and install the Application Compatibility Toolkit from Microsoft.
App. Compatibility Toolkit here

After it is installed, on the start menu, go to "All Programs/Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 4.0/Tools" and run the Compatibility Administrator.

When the program opens, make sure New Database is highlighted under Custom Databases, and click the Fix button.

In the "Name of program to be fixed" box, type SH3. Now, click the browse button, and select the sh3.exe in your SH3 install directory.

Click Next.

Under "Operating System Modes" select None.

Click Next.

In the "Compatibility Fixes" box, check DelayDLLInit, and click the Parameters button.
In the "Command Line" box, type d3d9.dll and click OK. (You can click the "Test Run" button to make sure it is working.)

Click Next.

Click Finish.

Click the Save button, name it SH3, and click OK.

On the File menu, select Install.

Close the Compatibilty Administrator.

Enjoy SH3.

Hope this link works, but here is a write up I did on how to target fuel tanks, engines, etc.

How do you answer radio messages? I keep getting them, but I don't know how to read them.
