Silent 9800XT?

Simple Question: Is there a silent Radeon 9800XT?

Probably effective enough as long as you dont overclock. Trade off. Non overclockablility for silence.

It would be more effective if they had the fan blowing with the grain of the heat sink instead of against it though. Look where the fan is, and look which direction the heat sink fins run. You want air to pass through those fins not bump over the top of them.

I'm not sure why you guys are saying you can't overclock with that setup. That looks just like the Zalman heatpipe with fan, right?

Personally, I'm running a 9800 pro with Zalman ZM80C-HP and ZM-OP1 fan set to low at 435/360 with no problems. There are a ton of other people doing the same.

I'm surprised HIS doesn't sell an XT with their IceQ cooler. It looks like XTs are sold as a whole card by ATi, as everyone is using the same HSF (Sapphire probably makes the cards for ATi, thus their ability to create an Ultimate version). You might look into the HIS 9800 Pro 256MB w/IceQ--I'd imagine it performs similarly to the XT, but you get the nice near-silent cooler.

The Sapphire is nice, but you'll want an extra fan on it, like Mike's config.

The HIS IceQ cooler is actually an Arctic Cooling Silencer
It dont think it is compatible with 9800 XT

And like Pete said, you need the fan on it per Zalman's recommendation for 9800 and 5900 series cards. If you get the Zalman fan you can hook it up two ways....12V and 5V (silent). You can't hear it running with the 5V config.

It's a fan, honestly, your cases prolly have about 4 of them anyway, what difference will one more make? I'd rather be able to OC in the future, rather than just have a silent card. It is interesting if you are thinking about a media center PC tho, and when the phantom power supply somes out, and BTX, you can have 1 fan cases! Now THAT'S quiet!
