It's not an easy task, I tell ya. I tried to silence a computer with an epia board once, thinking it would be simple and cheap! You just can't buy quiet fans anywhere - I've got cpu, case, psu, & an extra fan to keep the HD cool. All I needed was minimal airflow, nothing fancy. Everyone can buy a 3GHz Dell that's dead silent, yet I cannot purchase fans to make a 1GHz C3 silent... So being tired of adding more fanmates, I just said "screw it, I'm wiring these fans in series." Bet that's not in your faq!

Anyways, I'll add something to it, go Toshiba for quiet cd/dvd drives & burners. I've come across 'em all, NEC, LG, Lite-On, MSI, Plextor...

Still not as quiet as Nexus fans since I have both in my system. But I can find the Coolermaster fans for less than half the price of Nexus ones locally, so they can be very good value.

The thing that makes the Nexus quiet is its low RPM which is due to its small motor (less than 2W). If it had a bigger motor (most of the 120mm fans in my fan drawer are 5-7W), its RPM would be comparable to other 120mm fans and it would probably be in the 40+ dBA range.

That brings up a question: assuming you had a sacrificial 120mm fan with relatively light plastic blades, how difficult would it be to replace the motor with one from a 2-3W 80mm or 92mm fan?

one addition (great writeup). i read somewhere that certain logitech mice make a high pitched whine when they're 3 feet or 3 inches from you ear...i'm pretty sure it was the mx510. you might want to check that out and add taht

another thing i remembered reading from a while back. you can void the warranty and take apart the mouse. disabling the click of the wheel (i think) gets rid of the whine.
